I am sure we are liked with Glasgow Rangers and United are with Celtic!! There used to be scarves with both clubs on!

Eh, no pal you're grossly ill informed, daft or just ignorant.

No he isn't, I remember the City/Rangers and UTD/Celtic scarves.

As has been pointed out there were also City/Celtic scarves and hats as well, remember seeing them in the old souvenir shop at Maine Rd.

Why should it annoy you, plenty of jocks moved down to Manchester over the years, my Dad (god bless) was one of them, he was a Celtic fan but when i came a long he took me to City, and another City fan was born. How many of us must have shared a similar experience..

Sorry, my bad and a somewhat hamfisted post!

The element that annoys me about Celtic/Rangers and the so called City/United connection is the inferrence the lines of demarkation between City and United are based on sectarian grounds when clearly, irrespective of what some bigotted elements will have us believe, it is not the case at all.

City have never been about anything other than football, afterall, we signed Bert Trautman at a time when Germany were still seen as untrustworthy and pretty much still the 'big' enemy.

As for anyone who is a City fan, they are absolutely fine by me! It is great we are the Manchester club, but I do not hold that you have to be from Manchester to be a Blue.

I suppose the thing I really fail to grasp is loving two mistresses. City and City only for me. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of results I look for after City's but I could never say "I support City and ........" because I don't.

Then again, I accept I may well be in a minority.

Eddie speaks the most sense on this thread.

I heard all sorts of people making all sorts of wild claims about who City fans are supposed to be 'mates' with over the years.

Most of them turn out to be attempts to claim that because the individual talking (and maybe some of his mates) is actually fond of that club, rather than there being some sort of offical link between the clubs.

So I have a bit of a distrust of people when they say "City fans love XXX" cos it usually means "I like XXX and I wish more City fans would too."

Not that it is particularly important or winds me up.

Although one thing that does wind me up is people who claim that there is some sort of link between City and Untied and the Old Firm because most, obviously not all, clubs that claim to have links with the old firm (think Chelsea, etc) do so because of their own snide little sectarian desires.

That sort of stuff can get the fuck out of Manchester , imo, anyone who seeks to claim links between Manchester football and Glasgow football needs to pipe down, again imo.

And, like Eddie, I might look for the results of a few teams but that doesn't mean I 'support' them or that I think every other City fan should also look out for their results.

I support City because I am from Manchester. It's that simple. (Oh, and the away team at Old Trafford for the same reasons)

If I remember correctly there was a bond between City and Rangers caused by the fact that in the 70s Rangers came to Manchester for a friendly against the Rags and kicked United all over town. This was at a time when City were outnumbered by Cockney,Donny Reds etc and would get a bit of a kick in from our Red friends.

A lot of Rangers used to also come to support City I am sure during the 70s and 80s.

Myself I don't join in singing about the 58 disaster...I don't think the Toro fans (least the ones I have contact with) are avidly aware of the importance a minority of our fans place on the tragedy...As for the friendship/link then all I can speak is what I have seen, discussed and have heard from others....I think it's obvious to anyone who knows about the Citys of Turin and Manchester and the difference (team wise) between "lodgers" and locals will understand that there is some kind of common bond...My flag will be on the Curva Maratona at some stage next season...It was so popular that they wanted to keep it on permanent display...might let 'em keep it next year !!

Nigel did you attend the pre-season tour of Italy in 1992 when we played Torino?

that was a good trip with the Chaddy lot - hope Bernard's eye brows have grown back ! Of course we have a friendship with Rangers - manys a time the Sash was sung in various pre-season/friendly games in Scotland when our Blue brothers would join us (80s & 90s)- anyone who went to the Celtic "friendly" in early 90s at Shelbourne's ground would know the emnity between us and them - it was horrendous.I know things have changed (and for the better) but those images will take along time to erase from memory

Yeah I was there,City outnumbered 10 to 1.In fairness the Scotch Celtic fans were good lads and kept an eye out for me and the missus. The boys that came down from Derry were arseholes.
