I agree. Were not buying the top shelf players anymore. Were aiming for them, missing and buying the next level down - and sometimes the level below that.
Then we are wondering why we havent won anything.

Unless we make a couple of big signings I can see another year of no trophies and then some of the top shelf players we do have will start to become restless.

No idea why we penny pinch on the better players and lay out vast sums of money for a 28 yo player from the russian league. Insane!

The squad didn't go backwards in terms of personnel. It went backwards because we had too many players underperforming consistently.. We haven't sold anyone other than Balotelli who wasn't contributing much anyway

With regards to Garcia, many thought he would be a good signing. And he's certainly not ageing, he's only 26. He struggled to handle the pace of the league.

The only ageing player we've signed is Fernandinho at 28. You were probably one of the fans screaming for Van Persie last summer who according to your thinking is also ageing

Yeah but the marquee names are not always the best. Fernandinho is an excellent player. Juventus signed Vidal from Leverkusen for under £10million and he is now arguably the best box-to-box midfielder in Europe. And yet had we signed Vidal, you could have thrown the same criticism at us going for the lower profile players. Kompany, Nastasic, Zabaleta were also low key signings. If you use your scouting network well you don't need to buy the £40million players, although a marquee signing every now and then is nice.

I think though people are just upset of the lack of quality signings we've made. Last season, we signed Garcia, Sinclair, Maicon, Nasty and Wright. 4 out of the 5 have been disappointing to say the least while our rivals alas Chelsea and Man Utd have signed players such as Hazard, Oscar , Kagawa and RVP. We should be improving at the rate of our rivals to maintain our success. Take Bayern for example, they won it all but they know that to maintain that success they need to sign world-class players and have done for example, Gotze. After last season, we get a marquee signing that can push us that extra bit more. Fernandinho is a very good player but there is no value for money signing a 28 year old for 30M with no competition especially considering some of the deals other clubs have got e.g. Gotze (30m), RVP (22M),Isco(22M),Hazard(30M).

The argument shouldn't be why are we missing out on the top players but more of what we deem is value for money.

Yes there is an argument to why did we pay £30M for Fernandinho but lets give the lad a chance. Haven't seen much of Isco to say whether or not he is worth £30M. So I cant judge him but if he signed he as well deserves a chance.

What I will say is if we are valuing a players worth after 1 tournament all I will leave you with to think about is that horrible rag ****.

But you can't just keep buying superstars all the time because inevitably, some just fall by the wayside. It's like buying a load of porn one weekend but not having enough time to view it all and the following weekend, buying a load more without giving last weekends a chance to impress you.
That's the way I see it anyway.

Something that is weird about the Isco saga is how few clubs were in for him. Imagine Messi at age 21 being on the market for €30m... every club in every country would be stuffing their money down his g-string.

But with Isco, one was Manchester City (at the request of Isco's football daddy), and the other was Real Madrid (almost forced into it by Zinedine Ze Ram).

I know he's brilliant against 18 La Liga clubs and U21 players, but he went missing against Dortmund and very barely features (if at all) for his national team.

Reportedly, he rejected offers from Monaco and Borussia Dortmund too, but they were never really considered.

They seemed like rather half-hearted attempts though. Barca/Bayern/Arsenal/Chelsea/PSG/rags didn't feel like throwing their hats in? Were we even interested before Pellegrini came?
