Just spent some time reading back through this thread. Tolm and co seem to talk about "bombs" a small number of signings to take us from good to great. That cuts the targets down to a relatively small group of players - most of whom are already at big clubs and are largely unobtainable. Of the people discussed would it be fair to summarise our targets as follows:

Martinez - now looking unlikely, he shows no desire to push for a move and has probably been told that Barca will come in for him in the future - probably next summer. I guess if we activate the release clause things would get interesting but, that's a little over priced and I guess we will have sounded out whether Martinez is up for it.

Villa - may be an option but age and recent injuries may count against that. Not really the sort of signing I'd expect but he'd be a good option on the left and up front.

On the basis that most of the better players in Spain are either at RM or Barca or are effectively RM or Barca bound (a la Alba) its difficult to identify any further "bomb" targets in Spain. I'd therefore assume Marwood's Spain trips may be related to an out (Tevez) rather than an in.

There's some speculation re German players but I just can't see that - German's tend not to leave the Fatherland - except for RM.

In Italy there is clearly a backdrop of financial reality setting in. Milan may not be the only people selling the family silva!

If Silva and Ibra are both PSG bound that cuts the options considerably. I'd be amazed if we don't move for Silva if he's available. I won't comment on Ibra because he divides opinions but he could be an option.

Lavazzi is already gone and we don't seem prepared to pay the extortionate fee being demanded for Cavani. Personally, I'm not sure whether we play to his strengths.

De Rossi effectively closed the door when he signed a new contract @ Roma.

Juventus don't need to sell - given their financial backing from Fiat - so I'm scratching my head re other targets in Italy. there is certainly not the quality in Serie A that there was a few years ago.

That leads me to believe that our targets are either in the Premiership RVP - but god knows who else! Or are further afield - Portugal, Russia or South America.

I guess we will all have to be patient but the club (if they are up to anything) have done a brilliant job of concealing our targets.

Our owners are simply brilliant so I remain convinced we will all be Happy come the end of August.

I fancy a possible move for Falcao. The most recent quote from him was that he was tightlipped about his future in Spain.

I'm going to really piss off the Falcao fans now, Chelsea are sniffing around him aswell as Hulk.

Expect a couple more big ones from Chelsea before the window shuts

how about our big ones fella, are we after hijacking the PSG deals?

I hope we know what were doing - if Chelsea get these players they'll be a real threat next season.

A little concerning that the hints from Tolmie etc have gone from droppings bombs at the beginning of the summer to hints at getting less stellar and more experienced people - seems like downplaying the type of players we're after.

Yes I do remember when our summer transfers consisted of players like Bradbury and Pryor to Reina and Beasley - but those days are long gone and not going for the very best players can have consequences regardless if we've won the league the season before.

I want us to completely dominate.

how about our big ones fella, are we after hijacking the PSG deals?

Not heard anything about hijacking, all i'm hearing is it's all done and in the region of £51mill

While they're undoubtedly good players with the potential to be excellent players, both Falcao and Cavani have their level exaggerated on here to be honest, at least in terms of what they proven/achieved so far in their careers.

Atleti will get a HUGE fee if Falcao goes to Chelsea (which I'm not sure I can see this summer), they are a selling club who seem to have adapted to the role perfectly and always come out on top, relatively speaking.

I thought this would be the kind of deal that we would jump at. I am unsure about the need for Ibra, but T.Silva is a signing that is needed. 51million for the both is damn good business. Milan probably would have quoted us that just for T.Silva a couple of months ago.

Initially I was unsure about the need to splash the cash as I was attached to the current squad and not in a rush to challenge Madrid and Barca. A year or two of winning the league would have suited me fine. However, with Chelsea going to apeshit the league isn't going to be close to comfortable next year and so I am now convinced we need to strengthen significantly.

I am confused as it seemed like Mancini was keen on T. Silva and now that they are available we've gone of the boil. Was it all media hype to begin with? Or are we keeping our cards to our chest and about to bid?

-- Fri Jul 13, 2012 11:22 pm --

Watch a lot of La Liga and I have to agree with Seosa. Last couple of years Martinez has underwhelmed me. To use a racing term for me he hasn-t trained on.
Falcao however is a different story. His form last year was the equal of Messi and Ronaldo when you take into account that Atletico are not a dominant team. His ability to make something out of nothing, his ability to score with left, right and head. Reminds me of Gerd Muller.
