It's Quiet 17 - Glory Thread

We clearly are on the same page about young players. As for Cole, I think there is a feeling that he could be a great player and, naturally, people are enthusiastic about him; I don't think anyone expects him to play anywhere other than on the right side though.

I was really thinking about players like Oscar Bobb, Carlos Borges and Sam Edozie (whose loan/sale appears to have passed). I think Bobb has more to his game than Kayky, but it always remains to be seen when the step up is made. As for Borges, he is dynamite at academy level, as is Mbude.

I hope they get opportunities but I am realistic enough to note that we compete on all fronts. I hope that this is the year that we blood a few more in cup competitions (Delap, Mbete, Wilson-Esbrand, Lewis) and also give them minutes in the PL (in games where we are comfortably winning) so that they are ready when called upon. This could be the year, for two reasons: their talent, and our squad size.

We agree in general. Although admittedly, some of those players you mention are just names to me, take your word for it.

Youth players don't just get thrown into a season like that, they gradually build up minutes, in a full team. So I don't expect names that haven't yet featured for us to just come into the team. Kayky had 2 appearances that I remember. Palmer had a few too, 4 in the league. Both of them you can expect to have a few more. Others, need to have those 2 or 4 first.

I've seen quite a few people claim we will use kids when league games are won in 60 minutes. I find that a bit presumptuous myself. Both that many games will be won like that, and that Pep would then use kids there.

I think the ‘Pep uses kids’ mantra has come from that Barca team but let’s face it, the ‘kids’ he was using were Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, Busquets, Alba, Pique, Pedro etc. who were a cut above the rest in European football, never mind just at Barca.

He’s brilliant for young players in the sense that if he can develop the games of an ageing Silva or Aguero then just by coaching he will do wonders for youngsters regardless of if he plays them.

It’s why I don’t hold out much hope for JWE playing too much this season despite being short in the position and him impressing in pre-season. Instead we’ll adapt with the senior players and/or bring in a left back.

Not necessarily anything wrong with it all, just we’ll only see unbelievable players come through to the first team - like Palmer, Foden have and hopefully like McAtee and others will.
I think one of the reasons Pep threw that idea out of the window was the pressure from the British media, they were so desperate and hungry to see him fail.

The media hostility and ridicule during his first season made him determined to force the proverbial humble pie down the throats of the British media lynch mob.

Going by how prudent his transfers were during his first season, you could see that he wanted to take the "slowly but surely" approach, but the media jumped on that opportunity to call him a fraud, fans wanted quick success and I suspect behind the scenes, maybe just maybe the Sheikh and his "man dem" wanted quick success also.

The fact that Pep was willing to play nacho in a big game like the Derby showed that he came here with the "Pep plays kids" mindset and was willing to see it work but certain factors changed all of that.

its amazing that any player with any sense actually wants to go there currently?
Players and sense don't necessarily go together however Agents should know better but I suppose a percentage of everything they get the player to do helps them fill their pockets and 'best interest' of the player is likely a out money for all parties these days.

Very true! There is literally no way Barca can sort their wage cap issue imo and players like lewandowski, kounde, raphina all just don’t get registered yet still paid? How does that work out in the end???

I'm too old now,(to a degree), to be considered a "flapper",there are other things in life, family etc that take over that mantle these days, and I have kept tight lipped.However..........

This,as many have eluded to in this thread,is one of the strangest summer windows I have ever seen, well, especially since the take over, and it is going to be a strange old season, but one I'm desperate for us to retain the title at least.

But I can't help feeling there seems to be a few fuck ups going on behind the scenes,we can't even agree on who is going to be club captain for fucks sake,Pep says he will let them decide and choose,no Pep,you are the coach and it's you who should decide,he can't decide neither on whether he stays or not,and it's a case of one game at a time scenario gonna be played out, fucking weird times if you ask me.

Again, like many others in this thread, have not lost too much sleep with the departures, albeit a few surprises there as well, but if Bernardo goes,we are playing with fire,UNLESS we have a couple still lined up before window closes,I hope we do !

That Cucarella situation in itself beggars belief, from what we have seen regarding transfers in the last decade, somert does not seem right somewhere.

We win this afternoon, which I think we will, just, then it will calm a lot of heads down I suppose, including me,but as this is gonna be a strange season in regards the stop start,I don't want us to contribute to it as well in being strange.

Let's hope this next few weeks brings in a few more fresh faces, and we can get control of it all again.

Oh and a good win this afternoon please

The captain situation I agree is a farce and I’m a firm believer that the manager should always pick the captain!

Disappointing, if true. He won't count as club trained for us then.

Think it shows that people that keep hoping Pep will use kids this year have their heads in the clouds.

With 3 spare squad spaces, the smallest squad we've ever had, and effectively two wingers down, surely keeping him around for a year of bit part appearances, and getting his CT box ticked would be sensible.
Our squad size is getting ridiculous, and a huge risk is being taken in getting rid of near first team squad players. If we suffer a couple of injuries in these first few weeks, the subs bench will start to look very weak

Palmer maybe, sure. Who according to a few here is already a first team regular and all round player for every position.

Helpful having both imo, this season when we are light, and also long term, a good thing to have him complete his CT period. Even if he then is sold with a buy-back, means if he does ever get good enough to come back that is there.

It is this wishful thinking that Pep will use kids to fill the gaps in our squad. I would honestly love it if he did, and respect the club's decision to not sign any more. But as player after player people keep mentioning leaves the club, pretty evident he won't.
Palmer is a first team squad player, 100%. There is no doubt about that.

You've obviously not watched Kayky besides Youtube highlights, as he's shown nothing at all to suggest he would play for any PL team, let alone ours. He would have to stay for 2 more years to be club trained as he only joined last summer.

Hudson-Odoi wants to leave Chelsea? Anyone think pep could get him back to what he was a few seasons ago as a wide option for us? Definitely talent in there that the bald genius could unlock?
He'd provide a bit of what we are lacking the wide positions in providing width on the right. Not the kind of deal we'd go for though I'd imagine.

Can't imagine Chelsea being as charitable to a rival team as we have been this summer either.
