Yeah, we''l get more money, I just sense people think if he signs a new deal he's staying until he's 35 and I doubt it changes anything except the numbers really.
You’re right of course mate - this is no guarantee he’ll stay beyond this season.
But it does give us a way of putting him on more money, which makes leaving the Club a lot more difficult decision in the current context.
At the moment, he’s on £150k p/w - which is so easy for any potential buyer to exceed that leaving City for the lifestyle he wants is the very definition of a no-brainer.
If we up him towards our very highest pay bracket, we’re making that decision a lot more difficult - for all parties.
Let’s say for example a Club that operated in a League with a tight wage cap - which they’re consistently struggling to keep within - wanted to buy him. At the moment - they best £150k, and he’s theirs.
However if they knew they needed go go north of £250k to beat his wages, that would give them a serious headache trying to get the numbers to work with a wage cap. Particularly if the Club in question have a stockpile of bang average players on hugely inflated wages who they’re struggling to shift as a result.
If said Club couldn’t beat the wages he’s on at City - a financially exceptionally well run Club in a League with no wage cap - then by extending we’re playing the advantage of the PL vs La Liga to improve our hand. Even with a Release Clause.
Smart move all round, as it also starts the conversation at £250k+ for Bernie and his agent.
