It's Quiet 17 - Glory Thread

That's why this one in, one out was a baffling transfer strategy this summer, especially when you see teams signing players for fun without selling . Still leaves us very short on numbers
If we are short, and I don’t believe we are really, it’s maybe one player, depending how ready Gomez is, so not very short of numbers.

A lot of people complaining about numbers on here don't seem to be taking into account that Sterling, Jesus, Zinchenko and Fernandinho all left citing a desire for more game time. Likewise, Ake was understood to be open to a move to Chelsea because of the prospect of more first team football.

This reaction even after a season where Torres left midway and Mendy, well the less said the better.

Much as it would make us all feel better, it wasn't likely to be sustainable to have two full 11s that could legitimately have finished 1st and 2nd in the league.

I wouldn't swap our squad for anyone else's, that's for sure. We are fine.

Yep, I agree, its going to fuck our season right up. There are some very good players up for grabs in this transfer window but for some reason we're just ignoring them, I don't know why, it's not as if we're skint, I thought were in the black.
Like you say I think it will cost us this season I'm not expecting much in the way of silverware that's for sure.
Then you should visit the bookies and make yourself a big pot of money since with City being favorites in every competition you'll make out like a bandit, no?

Came home to news that Bernardo might be going to PSG!! FFS I thought it was over.

If I was to sum up this transfer window if Bernardo goes it would be “we finally signed the missing piece of the jigsaw but we sold the rest of the puzzle!!”

Five CBs is excessive but only because you expect at least one senior DM / fullback to be able to cover if four isn't enough... and I reckon you'd probably want a half decent youngster kicking around as well.

Right now, Rodri is barely in the picture as cover because Philips is injured, and Walker is the only RB until Gomez proves he is ready, which remains an if. I don't doubt his technique, but he's clearly being asked to step up physically.

That's with one injury in midfield.

I see four potential open slots in this squad.

A winger with pace. Like: Leao.
A senior LB who won't get bullied and can play. Like: Lodi
A central player, quite possible another ball carrier as KDB is so far up and we are playing much more of the pitch at once. Like: De Jong
The fourth is a suitable RB, with some of Kyle's physical attributes, but younger or more technical.

Now, if we go on to sell Bernie, my clear opinion is we would need two of the first three to make it safe.

If we keep him, the priorities are less clear to me, but I think a utility RB stopgap / long-term Kyle replacement would solve several issues - even if some are only potential issues, it's already too close for comfort.

We should stop here, and remember we sold our experienced LB. In addition, we sold Lavia (DM/CB) to a prem club, Porro and Kabore (both RB) to sides in today's CL draw. Those are the players who - in addition to Cucurella - would make this situation safe. I'm not saying we were wrong to let them leave. I am saying tho, those decisions contribute to why we feel under pressure right now. And it's the same with incomings, Philips injury is recurrant, and Gomez is being asked to step up.

My feeling is clear, this one is on the board. Haaland changes so many things for this club. I don't think tho, that excuses them from the obligation to provide the manager with a squad of sufficient depth.
Why are you saying we are a right back short when we have the same as last year 2 like other clubs and I am sure options in youth teams or CB who can play there ? You say we are left back short which I might agree with but we are again the same as last year. Needing a winger I get as we have lost Sterling. Ball carrying midfielder like KDB again I don’t get given that we are the same as last year

What news?

Musing this evening. The WC runs for a month from 20th November, under three months from today. The winter transfer window opens 1st Jan 2023 a short time after the WC concludes and the domestic season restarts.
Just maybe we have players lined up who want to stay with their current club so as not to jeopardise their chances of involvement with their National Team.
Maybe a bit far fetched but I can’t believe that our hierarchy can believe that we can navigate the second half of the season with the current squad.
Even if I’m wrong we can still buy players in January. We don’t do this often but 22/23 is an unprecedented season.
