Yes we could. I've said before that buying Messi is effectively a zero-sum transfer. When this deal was first put together (in 2013) I believe the club reached agreement with Nike and Etihad that their respective deals would be increased to a level that covered the fee. That's something like an additional £25m from Etihad and £12m from Nike.
In addition we'd secured a number of additional sponsors at £5m a year each, which would cover his wages.
So there's absolutely no issue wrt FFP as amortisation and wages would be covered by additional revenue.
If we've been trying since 2013 then why we would wait one more year I don't know. He's not getting any youngerMakes sense although aren't Nike out the door at the end of the season? Not that a Messi clause couldn't be written into the UA contract.
I don't see it happening this summer but it will be interesting to see if Messi signs that new contract: we could make it worth his while not to and still save money vs paying his release clause now.
In today's market that's 208 weeks (4 year) contract then ;-)Messi on a free? he'll end up on £1m a week wages easy on those terms.
I agree. If there's no financial issue then why wait? As ever though, it depends on Messi. If we've been trying since 2013 then why we would wait one more year I don't know. He's not getting any younger
Regarding Fpp, as I said earlier when trying to decipher Tolmie's recent video about us not starting the fire.
We didn't. PSG did. And if they can sign Neymar and by looks of it Mbappe in one go then any fire over fpp is down to them and there is no way that Neymar and Messi will both be kept away from elite competitions by a petty vendetta against both of us.
It was Nike at the time but having Messi enables us to name our price.Makes sense although aren't Nike out the door at the end of the season? Not that a Messi clause couldn't be written into the UA contract.

So basically if they sign both Neymar and Mbappe we then spend the 250 mill to release Messi?
Not saying we will pay that when he is free next Summer. Just that if ever fpp was a consideration its not now given what PSG are up to.
And someone somewhere might want to show Qatar they are not the only big new kid on the block.

Didn't have to wait too long.
Well at least we can all have a sing song in the cardiac units across the North West , I reckon there would be quite a few of us!I'll have a heart attack if we ever pull this through.
