Pep spoke with Mbappe's dad during our negotiations with Monaco last summer according to a French journalist i know out here. The family were impressed with what he had to say and this journalist seems to think that his most likely destination this summer, if he were to leave Monaco, would be City. Does make sense, after all Monaco confirmed that we went up to 40 million euros in our bidding last summer which shows how highly we rated him then. Can't see why we wouldn't continue to pursue him until such time as we either no longer needed him or he moved elsewhere.

I suppose counter argument to that would be we went out and got G. Jesus after being turned down...but it would be incredible.

He stood out massively in last seasons Euro U19 tournament.
France won it with flying colours with Augustin picking up the best player but it was clear to see Mbappe was the star player.
Strangely, the only team to beat France in that tournament were England.

What is the right number of players for a team with a front 3 and 50-60 games per season?
This is the question I keep coming back to when people throw around Sanchez or Mbappé hints or rumours because to me, 4 with a youth player or veteran who don't mind just being involved as back up makes sense. The 4 main guys start roughly 75% of games each, and the kid or veteran starts maybe 10 games and mostly comes off the bench. Everyone is happy, everyone plays, there's good cover for injuries and even potential to bring through some very talented academy players through as/when needed.
So given we already have 3 nailed on - Sterling, Sané, Jesus - we would only looking for a veteran (Nolito? Llorente?) or a kid (Kelechi, Unal, Roberts?) and one more front line player - Aguero, Sanchez or Mbappé.
Now it's entirely possible Pep doens't share my theory of 4.5 players being the optimal amount for 3 positions, but I am worried that if he brings in a 5th main player, ie Aguero+Sanchez or Aguero+Mbappé or Mbappé+Sanchez, then it will actually be to the detriment of everyone as someone will be wasting away on the bench, getting unhappy and generally causing disharmony in the squad.
Not to mention the undue investment in that end of the squad can only take away from our Goalkeeper, fullback and centre-back budget.

I have thought of that as well, but even for guardiola playing Sterling and Sané for example as wingbacks, with Mbappe and Sanchez up front in a 352 with at least one of Silva or KDB in midfield is insanely over attacking. You nearly always have one full back and one winger.
Would also mean that any fullbacks we spend loads on would just be benched.

Don't see that helps with Sane and Sterling as neither make particularly good wing backs and doesnt play to their strengths.That has crossed my mind

Hopefully 60+ games so all 5 get plenty of games

Don't know what's so strange about Navas at RB, lots of people were calling for it under Pellegrini. He works incredibly hard, is surprisingly good in the air and it covers up for his lack of goalscoring.
Sterling and Sané on the other hand are 20 and 21 - they aren't prolific because they are young and have things to work on and learn, but it will be very disappointing if neither turns into 20+ goal a season players under Pep.

Hopefully 60+ games so all 5 get plenty of games
4-1-4-1 like we do now with KDB and Silva in the 4? It's the same issue for me, 5 players who all expect to play most games doesn't fit into 3 spots in the starting XI.

He can get away with it for a year and see how the young lads develop. Sanchez replaces Navas in the squad for me. The veteran/kid replaces Kelechi who I suspect will go on loan. Kun and Jesus remain the two main strikers.
