So in the space of one day we've gone from Messi coming to City, to Messi staying and Pep, Txiki and Soriano going to Barca!

Personally don't see Soriano and Txiki returning to the Circus even with a familiar president. At CFG Soriano has the freedom to implement his vision, that's not happening at Barcelona with all the politics and red tape.

The longer this goes on, the weaker any footballing rationale and further it degenerates into a grubby financial circus. The last couple of weeks have given an insight into the pantomime surrounding Messi and the divisions that will arise in our own camp if we continue to sniff his farts - no matter how aromatic.

Face it, he’s nothing more than €/£ signs in anybody’s eyes, so he might as well be guided by his family.

Pep might end up back there, it wouldn't surprise me if he went back there in a director of football type role, but I can't see Txiki or Feran going back, I think they are too big into City and CFG.

CFG has given T&F the vehicle they wanted to create at barcalona, they are the brains behind the model and are going nowhere, they are tied to this both financially but more importantly emotionally - they want this to rule world football and are in it for the long term.

While City's hierarchy may have liked the idea of Messi especially from a global branding point I think it's time to let this go.

If Messi had come it would have been a circus. Messi's first derby would be the headline, will he play better at Anfield than his last game there? And if he was out of form, would Pep drop him?

It's time to get/create our own Messi.

“No matter how aromatic” finished me

Bart will deal with anyone but us over Messi. If Messi was to go to City then not only has the worlds best player moved so has european footballs power base, Bart would deal with China, MLS anyone that doesnt have City attached to it .

I don't get it, surely come January he has the right to choose a club he wants to play for when his contracts expires at the end of the season

I hope this doesnt come off for the sake of Messi kids, i mean the eldest Thiago is crying cos he doesnt want to move to Manchester, If he was told its definitely happening it could trigger bed wetting episodes and we dont want that! I suppose when he is older and doesnt have to work that hard in life because of daddys riches, it will just be a distant amusing episode in growing up!

All the commercial reasons City wanted Messi (to elevate them and bring in new fans etc), surely a lot of these reasons would stop Barca wanting to sell Messi. IF they have Messi clauses in their sponsorships and the loss in shirt sales etc could equally break them. I reckon they need Messi more than anyone realises and would possibly have broken Bartomeo to let him go.

The statement from Jorge yesterday elated me & I was convinced he was coming! I really hope @tolmie's hairdoo is right and that he may still come this window. But I think that may bankrupt his beloved Barcelona.

I thought it made what would have been a dreary close season week watching news about COVID interesting. It would have been nice if it happened and still would be but we were only looking at a season or two and given our luck with injuries (Mendy,Aguero) maybe not even that. It seems a strange decision to stay as it looks like Barca will be rebuilding on a low budget for the next couple of years and only the US or China would give him a long term contract next year. Would have loved to have bought him 5 years ago.

Soo the clause in Messi’s contract, stating he can leave at the end of each season didn’t count past May then? Why fax the Club, saying your triggering the clause in the first place?

He's a poor manager who has got the job because of his standing in Cruyff's team. He's been appointed by Bartomeu because he'll do what he's told and weild the axe in return for finally getting to manage Barcelona after 20 years trying. He's shown at Valencia he's more than happy to be the stooge for an owner.

He will lose all the built up credit he has pretty fast when the team is poor, he has already pissed off the senior players by telling Suarez he wasn't wanted anymore in a 1 minute phonecall and not treating Barcelona's 3rd all time top scorer with even the slightest bit of decency.

He's also taken the job knowing full well that he's going to be fired as soon as Bartomeu is out, because both Font and Laporta are bringing in someone of their own.

So calling him a stooge and saying he's just a necessary body for the managers chair while Bartomeu tries to salvage something this season is fair IMO.

We revisit this quite a lot, your opinion is always recognised, however, your delivery is up there with some of the worse on the forum, it’s continuously matter of fact and leaves no room for people to engage with you.... you’re obviously a nice bloke, Dom, but less of the self righteousness ffs!!

He says the president verbally agreed he could go but then went back on that promise. If he doesnt send that fax it doesnt make it official and doesnt generate the buzz it has.
Now the narrative is hes being kept illegally (per contract) and against his wishes.

Looks like he should’ve got it in writing then, verbal agreements clearly account for nothing in football, even if you are the best player ever!

Why can't he just walk away at the end of this coming season his contract with the club will have expired, like Sane did

He wont leave now due to feeling Barça should get some money, you think he’ll not sign a co tract be it one with a lower buyout or such? I also do t think City should entertaining a 34 year old, 33 was a push but his commercial value made sense. A bad season and that plummets to a point it’s not a viable option. This isn’t about City buying Messi the player, it’s about Messi the statement and revenue maker. It’s a now or never situation.
