As much as I'd quite like to see Messi at City from a PR oint of view (as would the Premier League), I can't help the feeling that I'll be crushed if we do sign him but no centre-half and left-back (and perhaps midfielder).
Have a lie down - it will get done

Really none of this involves us. If FIFA decides Messi is a free agent - great. If he's not, it's still up to Barca to agree to enter into negotiations for his sale. If they don't agree, they have to deal with the fallout within the club. If they do, they might still be impossible to do business with, like Napoli, only worse.

The main lesson for me in all this is quite how badly Barca have handled all this. There is no good outcome for them from this - if I were a Barca fan I would have my head in my hands.

This seems so blindingly obvious that you'd think Messi's camp knows whether they're in the right or not here? It's quite cut and dry. Date - Barca win. No date - Messi wins. Surely any lawyer advising him would know this too, so why would he have gone so strong if he wasn't certain?

The problem either way would be all the fucking about if it has to go to court.

If FIFA can step in, then all good.

(Never thought I'd ever be saying that)

With few exceptions Barcelona fans have conducted themselves with great dignity and no small degree of class throughout this whole affair. I doubt any of them consider a transfer fee of any amount to be at all relevant. So, with no disrespect to any Barca fan, I do hope that we get Messi by Friday as Tolmie suggests and C F Barcelona get not a single centime/penny or anything else just to remind Bartomeu what a grade A **** he is, and to show what an absolute plonker Tebas is.

FIFA don’t decide, they issue and process the paperwork. I suspect Messi is just going to sign for City and Barca will take him to court. The court will rule whether he was within his rights to leave for free due to Covid extending the season. If he wasn’t they will look to see if the £700m release clause expired in the 4th year of his contract (this seems cut and dry as the exact working in the contract has leaked). If there’s no clause but he shouldn’t have left for free, the court will decide an appropriate fee taking in to account his age, wage, profile and probably Ronaldo’s fee as he also moved at 33 and matches Messi’s profile.
