I really think Messi doesn't want to go to court but will if he has to. No chance we will be made to pay the release clause, court will likely set a fair value.

Incredibly convenient for us that Ronaldo, the only player who can be compared to Messi as an asset, left Real at the exact same age for 100m euros, and he had 3 years left and no 'free' clause.
It's not so simple. Barca argues the buy out clause is valid. If they succeed in that argument then there is a very high chance we'd have to pay 700m. Buy out clauses are there for that reason and are quite clear by law.

Court sets the value if the 700m clause is deemed to have expired but the contract still stands.

Messi seems inclined to play the long waiting game hoping to drive bartomeu to negotatations.

I thought he would use the threat of a free transfer to drive bartomeu to negotiate but there has been no hint of that. If his legal claim is really strong, you'd think this would be the easy route but perhaps there is some doubt, hence Messi wants a negotiated way out.

Not if the buyout clause is considered 'abusive' under spanish labour laws. This has all been heavily discussed already.

Exactly.

It will be a 'reasonable' fee & Messi can afford to pay it, if neccessary, so we shouldn't be required to take any risks imo.

I can well understand he is keen not to go down that route, but soon will have to make a decision if Barca won't change their tune.

Tonight will be a good night

Can someone with a bit of legal expertise help me?

I've read loads of similar articles that state that FIFA approved the temporary extension of all player contracts due to expire in 2020 so that players could still compete in the delayed final matches of a season.

Now whilst I realise Messi's contract didn't expire in June 2020, it is claimed that Messi had a clause that said he could unilaterally terminate his contract and he could leave for free should he notify the club by June 10.

Given that a footballers contract is geared around the season dates, why wouldn't the associated clauses move with it too?

I can see both angles. A contract might run from 1st July 2016 to 30th June 2021 so the fact there are seasons doesn't break up the contract into 5 sub-contracts, it's still one single agreement. In that case, FIFA granting the extension might only be seen to apply to those whose contracts were due to expire OR have some particular mention of season ends.

I know the dad will have his best interests at heart but he seems to have taken on the role of a bridge between the two. Making the right noises and making sure both views are represented in the press. Before he arrived it was deadlock. Potentially they could be talking in next day or so.
