Still confused at why his Dad put that statement out questioning the validity of the buy out clause only a few hours earlier than the interview.

So how would letting him go for free have helped, other than the lower wage bill which would be covered by the commercial benefits.
The only way it's better for Barca is if they get a fee and if they do, the president can claim a victory as he stopped Messi shafting them by walking away for free

They are paying 1m pw for a player who doesn't want to be there & is 33 years old, at s time they need to rebuild the team, under a new manager.

On what planet is that anything other than stupid ?

You would think we should do the same if the situation was reversed ?

Does the actual football team not matter at all ?

Would Soriano have seen Messi's contract at any point?

If so he'd have realised that it wasn't as cut and dried as the Messi clan thought it was.

So the current impasse would to a certain extent have been expected given everyone knows Bartomeu is s tosser.

A very strange state of affairs. Messi will stay for one more year because the club will only let him leave if someone stumps up £700 million. His wife doesn't want to leave Barcelona and his children cried at the prospect. Was this delayed action crying? He must have known for a long time that his wife and children love Barcelona, or at least for a week! Yet ten days ago he tells the world he is no longer a Barcelona player and he wants to go elsewhere. Not only that but he doesn't turn up for testing or training, for a week. Then negotiations with the club get nowhere in an atmosphere which seems frosty to say the least and Messi issues a statement which is uncompromising to say the least, before announcing that he will stay! On what basis? Does he accept that he is actually still under contract? Or will he sign a new one?! Will he train? When? And how can he be sure that Barca will compete any better next season than they have at the time of the collapses he cited in his statement? Where did he want to go to compete for the top prizes.....? I suppose the affair is over, but what a strange, inconclusive ending....

Because everyone seems to think he's a commercial gold mine, so they must make more than a million a week from having him. If that's not the case, why did we want a 33 year old player?

I assume to back up Messi saying in the interview that he wants to leave but the board have gone back on their promise and now won't let him without legal proceedings.

Some people need to get a grip.

Look at his statement

1. He clearly wants to leave - he has stated that. - We all know its us he wants to come to - there is no other team he wants - look at his use of the word project - that says city all over it.

2 He has absolutely destroyed the ownership of Barca - when has any other player ever come out and taken such a blatant swing at a club chairman and board before

3. He has said he has been unhappy for a while - in his football, in the dressing room, at training - this wont sit well with his team mates.

4. His best friend (Suarez) is being sold

We as club havent done anything but support him - he will know this.

Id expect city to put a bid in for him...now this is where it gets interesting - Remember Barca have publically stated they want Garcia - there is no way we will sell Garcia to them if they refuse to even negotiate for Messi - and which is worse..having the best player in the world and your club capt/legend unhappy or a 21 year old squad player? We can let Garcia sit in the stands for a year (we already have Ake and will get another centre half) - we risk losing 15m tops by letting him go on a free - Barca risk losing 80-100m plus for Messi - and they are in a financial mess - we aren so who is more desperate for the money?

If we put in a bid now the pressure on the board to sell will be from all angles; players, some of the fans (reluctantly) and Messi himself as well as the financil pressure - they need to rebuild- they want Garcia they wont get him without doing business with us - there could even be pressure added from that angle.

Worst comes to the worst - he doest go anywhere, signs a pre-agreement with us in January and we get him for free - even for a year minimum thats worth it -the only thing that would stop that is a bad injury to him

Established that, as far as he is concerned, he has been prevented from exercising his contractual 'right' to leave imo.

They have banked it, in case the situation changes imo.

1.Messi can sign a new contract with new board at Barca after March. (70%)
2.You know what, I would not completely disregard the chance he renews with Bartomeu still in charge until March.(10%)
3.Also there is some chance he leaves for free next summer. (20%)

But option 1. imo is the highest possibility.

If he does option 2, well Messi camp then truly led City into the dark. If Barto is really evil and would want the new president to be in an awful situation he would give Messi a contract that cannot be fulfilled financially in January and then let new president to deal with the finacial meltdown of it.

Once he is back in trainings with Barca it is over...

I think if City are going to put in a bid at all, it would be when he's back in training and there'll be stories about how he isn't happy, it's undermining what Koeman is trying to achieve, Barca would be better off cashing in now and rebuilding etc. Maybe it won't happen, but given everything so far and Messi's quotes today, in a way I'd be more surprised if we don't.

To be honest, I'd rather see us act with integrity and let Garcia go there if that's what he really wants.

However, we wouldn't get any plaudits for that, even though we should.

Congratulations Messi!
Bartomeu is sure to lose the election.
You can enjoy your time at Barca until you retire.

Will he now stop getting the protection afforded to usual Barça players by referees ?
