I think Bernardo & Sterling's departures would be hard to take for me personally, in an emotional sense, because I love them both for different reasons. But I think them leaving would be ultimately fine for the squad, and maybe even a good thing. Say it quietly, but I think our forward line needs as much of a rebuild as the defence did in 2017, and maybe a bit of streamlining as well.
We can't carry on with the false-9 into next season because teams will figure us out, so we have to buy a striker. I also think that teams have gotten better at shutting down our attempts to get to the byline (probably why Sterling's struggled this season), which means we're going to need more skilful players who can unpick locks from outside the box. Grealish & Kane seem like our best choices for trying to solve this problem.
I think Jesus & Torres need to be swapped as well. Jesus is much more effective out wide, where he can use his strength and ability as a dribbler to influence the play - plus, his best games for City have been on the wing and I've always wanted to see him there more often. Torres is much better at finishing snap chances than Jesus is and doesn't seem to get caught offside anywhere near as often, so as a back-up #9 he'd be ideal.
Grealish & Kane are going to cost us close to, if not more than, £200m on their own, so we're going to need to raise a bit of cash. Bernardo can command £70m+ if we sell him to the right bidder, and Sterling could still command £50m+ if he has a good Euros. It would be a shame to see them both go, but Sterling and Pep maybe don't see eye to eye anymore and Bernardo might just want to be closer to home.
All perfectly understandable and perhaps even a good thing. If Mendy, Bernardo & Sterling are to leave, and Mendes, Grealish & Kane are to arrive...
