I must admit, if people don’t know the area I’m from I’d likely just jump straight to Manchester rather than messing about with ‘from ‘Stockport.

Exactly. Particularly with foreigners or southerners, many of them haven’t heard of Macclesfield, or don’t know where it is, so I usually just say “near Manchester”, or Cheshire, depending on how specific one needs to be.
