Maybe the elusive ‘footballing reasons‘ for City wanting Kane rather than Haaland are that Kane’s not only a proven striker in the Premier League but he’s a scoring machine.
Whereas Haaland would need to adapt to the the Premier League and not all players do.
Look at Werner, for instance, he had better stats than Haaland in his last season in Germany, and he’s an excellent player, but he’s not scoring for fun here is he?

And I say that from the perspective of a bloke who‘s very meh about the prospect of getting Kane, as we need to recognise that Haaland, like many before him, may not reach the heights that his magnificent early progress would seem to herald.
Very true, if we are in the american term of 'win now' mode then perhaps we do see Kane as the best option. He has also no doubt really impressed Pep this year with his link up play which I think had gone under the radar in last years.

A couple of years ago Jovic was the 'generational talent' as he racked up goals in the bundesliga and CL. Goals from all angles. Now Madrid would pay half his wages to get him off the books.

Haaland is undoubtedly talented but nor proven to the level Kane is. in 5 years time when Kane has passed Shearer's tally, a 25 year old Haaland could then be an option

Understand your point but you can’t dispute Haaland’s scoring record in the champions league, which includes goals against some top sides. Something we never were able to gauge Jovic with.

Jovic is a good striker and worth the €60m Madrid paid for him. He's another casualty of Zidane's poor squad management - he never played 2 games back to back the entire time he was at Madrid. Zidane didn't give him a chance.

However he's a completely different category of player to Haaland and if you can't see the difference then this sport is not for you. There's a reason one is being talked about as costing 2x as much.

55 goals in 58 games for Dortmund. 24 goals in 22 games in the Champions League.

Kane has 20/24 by the way, despite being 8 years older.

Aguero has 41 in 77 Champions League games

And he won't be available at 25, I don't know how naive you have to be to believe that.

The more I think about this the more I’ve decided that I don’t care who it is as long as they put the ball in the back of the net.
Kane has to prove he has the bottle to deliver on the big stage, and stay off the injury table.
Halaand has to make the transition from Germany to England, not as easy one, and has to prove the consistency that comes with still being young.

both a risk, especially at the money we’re talking, but truthfully either could do a job

He can't be that shrewd?

He's sold both Modric and Bale to Madrid, nobody can argue Real didn't get the better end of that deal?

He sold us Kyle Walker for £50m, the medals he has since accumulated suggests, again, we got him for a song.

He lets Pochettino go and hires a burned out Mourinho, before sacking him three days before a League Cup final.

He's no closer to appointing a recognised, top quality replacement.

In addition, he's lauded for spending £1bn of loans to build a stadium that should look fantastic for that price.

His best player now wants out and Spurs are now into their second decade since they last won a trophy.

Sounds to me like Levy has done a pretty crap job!
Or a pretty damn fine job in my opinion

Timo Werner has not given German football much credibility this season, we were linked with him before Chelsea made there move, no one is sorry we missed out.

The German league is very weak, we should not forget that.

Let’s face facts - when you put it like that, he sounds like Peter Swales!!!!

From what you are hearing TH would you say its more likely we end up with Kane or Haaland? I know that its probably just more guess work than anything at this point but Id be really interested to hear your view point on this....

For me Kane cuts out our chances of getting Haaland if we did get Kane...obviously....for me there is more longevity with Haaland (especially if we continue to be successful and as a club we seem to treat players very well so no reaosn to think he wouldnt stay), Id say haaland is more mobile, able to press better, able to pay across the front 3 unlinke Kane. I know kane's scoring record is excellent but for me he goes missing in big matches (including international matches at tournaments)....He also has no pace and there are legitimate injruy concerns with his ankle(s) which are only going to get worse in the next couple of years.

I just dont see why if we are going to go to 100m for Kane (plus the rest potnetially) why we wouldnt test Dortmunds resolve by offering the same for Haaland...

Is haaland more marketable than Kane or vice versa? Kane is as think as pig shit (however that didnt stop Beckham) - would this be part of the thinking of having the England capt in the squad - personally I dont want us to have anything to do with the England international circus that surrounds trounaments...having the England Capt at the club would cause that.

I can see why he would be an alterantive but I think we need to put the pressure on Dortmund (esp as if ou say Haaland is really keen to play for us)

We miss out this summer we have a potentially deteriorating Kane for the next few seasons instead of an improving young striker....who could end up staying longer and has more attributes that we require.

It's more an educated guess my response to you, as I simply don't know what has/hasn't happened at the Haaland end.

I wrote yesterday that the Kane deal is the easiest one to conclude because he wants it and City don't want to be messed around by Dortmund or Haaland.

There is enough to suggest that Kane is in the works and there has been contact going back a while.

I did post Kane interest last summer but when I heard Messi had said he was coming, that seemed to be the end of that.

City have always preferred the less glamorous statement signing, but Haaland appeared to be the one which would break our MO, both on price and global profile.

His people and Dortmund now know we have options and while Kane is one of the very best strikers in world football, his lack of charisma doesn't elevate him above Haaland for a certain fan.

Agreed.

Haaland exploits the marketing world far more than Kane ever could. We would probably recoup a decent portion of the transfer fee relatively quickly and still have an amazing/increasing asset if he ever wanted to leave.

Both guarantee goals though, which is what the majority on this forum are predominantly interested in.

Buy Kane and you add the best forward in the premier league to the best team.
Be nice to have haaland but I’d take Kane in a heartbeat
Some downers on here about him. But if he played for Dortmund or Ajax we’d all be well up for getting him
Just can’t see us paying the figure they want

You say Kane goes missing in international tournament, didn’t he win the golden boot in the last World Cup?? Also you say injury concerns, KDB has missed more games than Kane in the last few seasons so should we get rid of him?
