Jacinda Ardern

another one that needs bumping up - I am a big fan but I know its not all sweetness and light for her - they have an affordable housing problem too and she isn't immune from being questioned - she just goes on telly and answers questions

In fairness to Jacinda and the Labour Party their first term was thwarted by being in coalition with NZ First (a UKIP light for OAPs). Now we'll see whether she will deliver on the promise of eradicating child poverty.

The housing crisis is something they inherited, Covid has exacerbated it. How they can control it without upsetting middle class New Zealand, who swing the vote, is anyone's guess. Whatever they put in to fix it, I doubt we'll see the benefits for a long time and probably torn up should National be reelected.

The Tories in NZ (National Party) are as bad as their British brethren. Those now in opposition created this housing crisis, encouraged it, whilst refusing to acknowledge it was happening. They are now jumping up and down demanding that Labour fix it, whilst at the same time wanting to get rid of recently passed legislation forcing landlords to ensure their properties are habitable.

Are, by any chance, half of their MPs also landlords too?

Ardern can build 18,000 homes but if there's still net immigration of 60,000 then that partly explains why the housing crisis is getting worse.

It doesn't matter how many homes you build, if all else is equal, you could build a billion new houses every year but if your population grows by 2 billion, the housing crisis is not going to get any better.

That's just basic supply and demand economics and don't ever let some sneering, middle-class, shit-degree idiot from Momentum convince you otherwise.

She is wonderful.

She leads a right wing government and the same posters who blow smoke up her arse are slagging her off.

Eh ho....

Doesn’t make great reading but posting three versions of the same story doesn’t make it worse and in those there is some acknowledgement that she has made some improvements. Strangely one of them says she leads a centre left government which would be my take so not sure how you conclude she leads a right wing one.

And surely you’re making it up that posters are simultaneously slagging her off and blowing smoke up her arse? Happy to acknowledge your examples when you give them though

I think you have spectacularly misread or misunderstood my post.

It plays a part, but a very small part.

Decades of governments (both left and right) not building enough houses, the selling off of state houses and the last government actively encouraging foreign investment (no Capital Gains Tax is a big draw card) drove house prices to unaffordable levels, especially in Auckland.
Internal migration (mainly from Auckland and Wellington) to smaller cities has driven house prices up in the regions too.
Add to this the school zoning/decile ranking system, local councils ineptitude and reluctance for urban density. These have all played bigger roles than net migration.

The issue has been caused by the previous right wing government.

Improvements have been made, however it is hard to right this after just 3 years, especially when she had one hand tied behind her back with a right wing coalition partner.

She/Labour has just won a huge majority, so the next 3 years she has no excuses, time will tell.

The problem is a 3 year term is very short to make massive changes - I think if, as the end of 3 years there are signs of change that reflects a political will - unlike here where there are warm words but political parties are in hock to developers so say one thing and do another........yep.....looking at you Robert Jenrick

Of course, silly me.

She is a superstar.

Silly you indeed.

She certainly has achieved celebrity status, and surprisingly for a modern politician through her qualities as a n excellent leader as opposed to scandals, ineptitude, corruption and villainy.

Imagine that - PM interviewed by the press every Monday morning - taking and tackling the difficult questions. As a result of her Govt's actions over Covid that studio has panel and audience sat side by side. And the opening questions over the settlement of native lands - that Right Wingers response was typical bat shit crazy populist nonsense.
Hopefully the Biden/Harris ticket in the States will bring the USA back toward this sort of trajectory - 4 years won't be enough to destroy Trumpism but I look forward to the day when we don't have this clown in charge with a minister who says UNICEF should be ashamed of themselves for providing food for hungry British kids.....

In a world full of grey, this is the most black and white view of world politics I’ve read in a while. I’m not even sure it’s a view of something, it’s completely confused and all over the place.

You’re either Jacinda Ardern or Donald Trump, a right winger in New Zealand is now blamed for the American right.

A talk show in New Zealand is now reverted back to Trump.

In the same sentence you’re ranting about Trump it moves onto the Tories within 3 words.

By the way, if you scrolled up, New Zealand is also getting pelters for child poverty by UNICEF. Not that it makes child poverty in Britain ok, it doesn’t at all and the Tories should rightly get hammered for it. However there’s this whole “well she’s on our side as a left-leaning liberal so we’re going to defend her and say how wonderful she is as she says things we like and he’s right wing and disagrees with us so everything he does is bad and he should be removed” is fucking tiresome.

You’re ruining politics with this black and white approach to everything in the world and it seems many threads in this sub forum are just a venting mechanism for people who don’t get what they want with their vote.

Starmer, Johnson, Trump all get it 24/7 by the same 5/6 posters who do nothing else but rant about them... ok yeah the latter deserves it 24/7 but with the former two, and other politicians, doesn’t anyone want an objective debate anymore about them?

Sure, absolutely, I’d rather have Ardern over Boris, I’d rather have Starmer over Boris but there’s no objectivity anymore. It’s our good pot of people vs bad and that’s how you somehow get Ardern, to Trump, to Boris, back to Ardern as if they’re all the same topic.

Is everything to score imaginary internet points?

New Zealand has less than half the population of London which kind of puts it in to perspective.

yeah and its two Islands etc etc - thing is with a grown up approach to politics Labour won a majority for the first time for any party in decades. Then her/the party approach got buy in from the population who all worked hard on Covid. Then when new cases appeared that was repeated and so on. All this was on the back of dealing with the massive earthquake and the Mosque massacre.

Size of the population pales when you factor in the fucking tribal nationalistic approach to Covid and Brexit by the shit show here.

She's not as popular in NZ as people on here think, plenty of support but many detractors, very binary.

errr - thats democracy particularly at the moment however she has 3 years to retain support and from what I see she is doing a far better job than say, Johnson and his New Blue Wall
