Jadon Sancho

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bemoaning the fact Foden wasn't called up, it makes sense to me to do it gradual.

I just don't get why the same logic doesn't apply with Sancho, particularly in a set up that doesn't use wingers.
He’s on form for his club. Same with the kid who was at Norwich last year (but who I can’t remember who he plays for now).

Maddison who's been excellent at Leicester.

I think it's right that Southgate is selecting people on form/merit rather than just ability. It send out the right message and we won't have the same situation that Rooney was in, where he was guaranteed a place despite being crap for more than two years (before he was finally dropped).

Sancho deserves a shot and Foden will undoubtedly get his chance in the next year or so.

Spot on mate.

Maddison is almost 22, has played for the under21s, it's a bit different than Sancho's situation.

They're different players too - Sancho, whilst being very technically able, being more reliant on his physique than Foden. Thus he's probably keen to kick on whilst his body's working for him, and potentially forgo some of his thirties. Foden seems more in the Iniesta mould, where his game relies on technique and intelligence, and thus he could play well into his thirties at a high level, provided he doesn't burn out in his teens.

Sancho's decision making/intelligence on the pitch is excellent. There is a reason why he has so many assists.

I completely agree, but he's also a bit more reliant on pace and strength than Foden is. If we assume that players tend to have careers lasting around 13 years, Sancho may prefer to go 18-31 because he might lose a yard of pace into his thirties, whilst Foden may prefer to go 20-33 because he's not as reliant on physique.
