Putin immediately recognised Lula. I thought it would be possible that he wouldn't , what with Vlad being pro western populists.
I believe Lula blamed Ukraine for Russia's invasion, sorry special operation, some months ago.

Lula is a "both sides are equally to blame" person on Ukraine.

He's not supportive of Putin invading but blamed Ukraine wanting to join the EU for starting the war.

But he's better than Bolsonaro.

It’s probably for diplomatic purposes. Brazil has significant trade and security interests tied up with Russia.

I think it's just because he's he same brand of leftist as Chomsky, they've spent 50 years decrying American Imperialism (often rightly) and now they can't see the difference between an Iraq/Afghanistan situation and the entire world stepping in to stop a genocidal invasion.

It's one of the things I find so fascinating about the Ukraine war, it's very much a victory for centrists, with both the more extreme left wing and right wing factions, the warhawks and peace absolutists across the world getting very upset about it.

It's not often Ilhan Omar and Fox News are on the same side.
