James McAtee

All very well in theory, but their game time would come at the expense of game time for Torres , Stones, Ake , Zinchenko, etc. And then they wouldn't be happy.

Does that really matter. Your worried about upsetting players?

if we get players like foden - once in a generation footballer in the side, at the expense of say Sterling, why would you be bothered.

Palmer for example, if he ends up replacing mahrez.. mahrez gets benched and is unhappy. We’d get a local lad, who’d want to play at city for his entire career. I’d much rather have that.

Maybe /maybe not. I just get very weary of the negativity of people on here. For example, we won't / can't sign player X, Y or Z but Real Madrid / Barcelona / Dippers / Scum can. We don't give academy players a chance etc, etc. All our players are shit, eg FFS Mahrez, Pep is leaving tomorrow afternoon. You get the idea.
Why can't these folk see what we have got (and I reckon that our academy has now surpassed Chelsea's) and look at the squad, the financial position, the stability and, most of all, the trophies and come to the conclusion that we are the best run club in world football.
It's bad enough seeing the negativity we get in the media without BM chipping in with more.
Which is fine but some people are also taking into account what James Mcatee might be thinking. Nobody wants him to go but if he’s looking at Livaramento as an example, he could be a premier league starter if he moved to a lesser team.

In an ideal world he’d sign a 5 year deal before going to Brighton on loan, I wouldn’t be totally against us selling him with a reasonable buy back (say 30m) either.

McAtee absolutely will not start any games for us this season, that’s almost guaranteed.

Realistically, I know we won’t and that’s why there will be a big risk of us losing him. Playing 20 mins against the likes of Wycombe isn’t going to sway him when he’s got Brighton in his ear telling him he can be a star for them.

If City “believe he has a future at the club and have told suitors that he is not for sale at any price” (to quote Lee’s article) then the only real evidence of him having that future that is actually going to be meaningful is to play him.

It would be ok if we had him contracted until 2024, for example, as there is more time to show him that he has a future. In the current situation, the clock is ticking and I don’t think the club will gamble on losing him for free if he still hasn’t signed an extension by next summer (like Sancho before him).

Sancho reportedly left because he wanted game time at 17/18, don't believe he would be any nearer a regular now.
Some of the same folk who clamour for our very special youngsters to be given game time moan like fuck about regulars who drop their levels below perceived elite level.
More of an issue is the placement of those going out on loan, City need good relations with clubs where Mcatee, Delap etc,get experience at the best level.

Well we will see over the course of the season. I think we will probably play enough games that both can be facilitated, giving first teamers minutes as well as the most promising academy kids. It does not have to be one or the other.

I think there has been games historically where we have not given the kids a chance where we have been coasting and not used our full complement of subs.

For Mcatee he appears to have started the season so well, like anyone in life, its desirable to see a pathway to progress. As he has not gone on loan, as yet, the only other option is to make the bridge into the first team. It would undoubtedly make him a better player, more likely to sign a new contract and in some instances be more ‘valuable’ than bringing on a first teamer for 20 mins, when they played only a couple of days ago.

I would stick the caveat in it is early in the season so I can see the reasons why the likes of KDB/Foden and soon Gundogan will dominate minutes from the bench or start against Wycombe etc, but over the course of the season I hope he sees a bit of game time.

Think I heard about a year ago that he was at the Rags academy in his very early development but he never ever wanted to be there cos he's a fellow blue, his older brother John (plays for someone like Scunthorpe I think or did) is a Rag fan and James McAtee is a City fan but their dad wasn't taking both sons to different academy's... and seeing as his older brother was already with them James was forced to join them too until the Rags released his brother.

At which point James informed his dad he wanted to leave immediately to be with us, honestly not sure exactly where I heard this or if it's the wrong info but that's what I was lead to believe that he's defo a blue.
I believe I heard similar, also can’t remember where but I do recall seeing something that was along the lines of McAtee being at united while always wanting to be at city instead. It’s very evident from Twitter his brother is united anyway

Probably not really the thread to air that greivance. Wanting game time for acedemy players is probably the most natural thing in the world. Everyone wants to feel a connection with the club they support and one of the best possible ways is to see a young, local player, from the academy develop into the first team squad. I am sure I was not the only one who got even more satisfaction from Phil Fodens goal against Liverpool, knowing he was a blue and had come through the academy. Probably similar to how Spurs fans feel when Kane scores. We have been blessed over the last couple of years that players like Aguero, Zaba, Komps, Silva but others feel like ‘guns for hire’ and so if we have a player in the academy with the raw materials to make that step up to elite I see nothing wrong with giving them evert chance.

people really comparing being a starter for southampton with playing 20 minutes in the carabao cup against wycombe as a makeshift leftback? get real.

I’m not sure you understand. People are staying how our academy players could sometimes look at their opponents of the same age and wonder if they could be doing the same. For example Tommy Doyle was rated on a similar level if not higher at some stages, to Mason Greenwood. Doyle is now on loan in the Bundesliga 2 after two seasons of PL2 football while Greenwood has been breaking club records all because he was given the chance. I don’t doubt that at some point doyle and maybe others have thought to themselves I wonder if I got my chance elsewhere like these guys.
