James McLean

As an ex soldier and a kid who was in the city centre as the bomb ripped through Manchester I would rather people who wanted to wear it be the only ones. The army in this country gets fuck all compared to most countries (Home coming parades, never have to pay taxes, free healthcare, etc). So I don't see why people wouldn't want to wear the poppy for a few days just so our lads and vets get to feel a little appreciation for sacrifices made but we definitely don't want to hear the arguments because it drives it home that people really couldn't give a fuck. So there's my 2 pence.. take from it as you will.

I give a fuck, ttw.

I wonder how many PL players would wear the poppy if it were presented as an option rather than an opt out scheme.

I suspect it would be very low (perhaps just some Commonwealth players) if it were an opt in scheme where players had to specifically request a poppy.

I should imagine that within a PL changing room the peer pressure would be very high, and it would take great mental strength to be an odd one out.

Why do football shirts have poppies on them at all? We are creating problems where there should be none. I understand a minute's silence at the weekend, but beyond that is too much like remembrance by compulsion.

The poppy appeal has become a political weapon in the past decade (not the fault at all of the British Legion btw). People can choose to remember how and when they want, or not at all. I wear a poppy. Others not wearing one has no impact at all on my act of remembrance.

This is also the position of the British Legion.

Surprised that during any minute silence McLean doesn't put on some head phones and dances about listening to music

As a x service man I don't have a problem with people not wearing a poppy I served so people had freedom of choice .but this twat wants his cake and eat it your over here taking the money and hateing the people who watch and pay you so the sooner you fuck off the better
In your time in the armed forces, what actions did you take in protecting the freedom of the British people?
This line gets trotted out in the States all the time that our "freedom" is being protected....

The only thing being protected is British (or US) interests. Which usually means financial interests.

Agree with you about the shirts. I think they do it as they auctionn the shirts afterwards with proceeds to the BL

Im sure you're joking...but why would he deliberately be disrespectful...that would be a conscious decision to annoy people. By not wearing a poppy he isnt doing anything

When you've stood in a guard tower on stag protecting facilities that would make your balls glow neon if anything went sideways a 100 miles from soviet territory, you'd probably understand it mate.
But you are right, the money people don't get involved in stuff like that.
