James McLean

I don't want to spark off another series of tit for tat posts between us (one thing we can agree on is that we both have better things to do this evening, at least) but the fact that Sands a convicted terrorist has no bearing whatsoever if one does not recognise the legitimacy of the UK's position in Northern Ireland.
Sand was also a published poet, songwriter and democratically elected MP.
It is far too simplistic to dismiss his writings on the evidence of that conviction alone.
There are far greater reasons to discount Churchill's contribution to the world, for example - but let's not run off on that tangent.

I'm not saying that I don't recognise the UK government's position, by the way.. Frankly, I'm long withered by the whole Norn Iron situation (though less than gruntled by Wesminister's appalling attitude to the Good Friday Agreement of late) and am willing to recognise whatever it takes to give the people a chance to get on with the business of living. - Again, this is something better suited to another thread.
Spot on.

In your time in the armed forces, what actions did you take in protecting the freedom of the British people?
This line gets trotted out in the States all the time that our "freedom" is being protected....

The only thing being protected is British (or US) interests. Which usually means financial interests.
So good people like your self have the right to have a opinions that I may or may not agree with unless you would rather be living in say China and have your internet censored

Before people get up on their high horse and criticise him just have a look round tonight and on Sunday and see how many City fans don't wear a Poppy. If people don't want to wear one that's fine .I wear mine with pride and go to the Remembrance day service but don't feel I should enforce my views on anyone else

As an Irishman I have no problem with the poppy and I will applaud on Sunday during the game. The issue is am I disrespecting my grandfather who fought for Irish freedom against the same army who fought for Britain's freedom. James McLean has the same dilemma when he deals with the people of derry only his conflict is more recent in the memory bank

But Britain hasn't fought a country since Germany that would take away our freedoms. The Falkland and the middle east wars have nothing to do with our freedom. But protectionism of British interests.
