One of a few players who needs to get given a proper go in preseason, playing proper amounts of games alongside proper players, instead of the balls up that was this years pre-season. Despite all our players being away at the world cup, we still failed to give our relevant young players a chance, instead wasting time on people we knew were leaving or had no significant future at the club, like Richards, Sinclair, Nastasic and Boyata. The only ones got given a real chance were Kelechi and Zuculini, one of whom it looked like we had intention of giving a chance this year as we'd already decided to loan him, while the other still hasn't even officially signed for us 6 months later. Fucking shambles.

Next year we will have a good amount of young players who could be challenging for a first team squad place, so we need to actually give them a chance to show they're up to it.

I don't understand what you mean We tried out Nastasic, Rekik, Denayer & Boyata. Rekik was slow & crap, Denayer showed promise but was raw & clearly not ready but impressed Celtic, Nastasic bottlled out of several headers & blew his chance, Boyata had a few clumsy moments but was bigger stronger faster & more keen to fight than the other two, and better on the ball, so got the job.

Iheanacho showed he isn't far away, Zucculini showed possible suitors he was worth a loan & Sinclair/Richards/Guidetti got chance to try & impress possible loan/buyers.

I think it was a brilliant job. We got jobs for everybody but Sinclair, & had a contest between the cbs which Boyata won. Nastasic was also offered moves but turned them down.
If you see the main purpose of pre season as a shop window for getting rid of your cast offs, then I guess it went ok, but from a point of view of giving players a chance to fight for a place, it was a complet non-starter. We're supposed to be preparing for our season, not running a job fair for our undesireables. It's not as if we were trying to get rid of complete unknowns, who's buyers were going to make their decisions off of how good they were in pre season, were talking about first team players. In my opinion, pre season should be about getting the players you intend to play in the upcoming year up to match fitness, while giving the more promising kids a chance to show that they can make the step up. If a player has no chance of being in your plans for the year, then I see no point in wasting pre season time on them.

Boyata didn't win some contest to be our 4th defender, he was clearly already decided to be our 4th choice CB for the year, otherwise we wouldn't of given him the new contract. Nastasic was already being offered around and told to fuck off, while Rekik and Denayer were never given a serious chance to stake a claim. Denayer got about two halves of football, while Rekik got maybe 3 or 4, mostly playing at RCB to accomodate his partners preference, where he'd clearly never played before and looked completely lost (as left footed defenders usually seem to when you make them play there). Neither was given a platform to actually stake a claim, they both clearly had loans in the pipeline. Boyata got it because he was the one who we didn't care if he wasted a year only playing once or twice.

None of the young players were given a chance to stake a claim at all. Zuculini was outstanding and still got farmed out, despite our lack of CM options, so he clearly wasn't playing for a place. Fofana, Ntcham, Ambrose, Glendon and the rest of the EDS lads who might of been able to show they were worthy of cup squad or two never got any significant time to prove anything. If they can't get a chance in pre season, then how can you expect them to get a chance in games that matter?

None of those lads were anywhere near it. It would have just been a run out for them, not a serious trial. Not a chance in hell Glendon could have played his position in a first team game then, Ambrose was half the size he is now, Ntcham has only this season started to show maturity, which Fofana hasn't yet in a City shirt, but may be for Fulham.

All 4 of Rekik, Nastasic, Denayer & Boyata, were potential candidates for a job. Rekik just proved he's nowhere near it either in the air or on the ground, Denayer played some really nice stuff but was obviously not ready, Nastasic was fine until asked to defend a tough situation then bottled out, Boyata fought really hard to get the job, & got it.

The EDS kids are now getting close to being serious contenders & next pre season, I'm confident some will play. i imagine Denayer & possibly Rekik will as well unless we agree to them staying where they are.

Imo some of the kids should be in the squad for next weekend as they have improved in every aspect since the summer.

Jason Denayer hopes Virgil van Dijk will resist lure of big-bucks move until the end of the season

Jason Denayer has urged Celtic to resist all overtures for Virgil van Dijk - until the end of the season at least.

The 19-year-old Belgian central defender, currently at the club on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City, has enjoyed a productive relationship with van Dijk at the heart of Celtic's defence this season.

Denayer returned to Celtic's starting line-up in Saturday's 2-0 win over Hamilton Accies but with representatives from Arsenal watching Van Dijk, the defender is hoping the window with the squad still intact.

"There has been lots of people asking questions about Kris [Commons] and lots of speculation about Virgil too," said Denayer.

"From my own point of view and that of the team I hope that Virgil is here until the end of the season because he is a strong player. He has been fantastic with me.

"We are friends off the park too and on it we have developed a very good understanding.

"We speak often of football but I have not asked him about what he will do.

"It is up to him and the club to sort that out but I do want him to stay.

"No team wants to see any of their players leave and hopefully he will stay until the summer.

"He has helped me a lot on the pitch. He has a good understanding of the game and we communicate well.

"I think we got an understanding together very quickly."

Denayer himself is due to return to Manchester City this summer, although Deila has already considered trying to keep the player on another season-long loan deal.

However, with the forthcoming Europa League tie against Inter Milan on the horizon, Denayer is keen to use the platform to impress Manuel Pellegrini.

"I have to get to a certain standard and playing against players on that calibre can only help me," he said.

"I have enjoyed being at Celtic and it has been positive for me to play in the first-team this season.

"But I still think that I can keep learning and getting better.

"The game on Saturday was my first game for almost two months because of my foot injury so it will take me some time to get back to fitness and feel like I am at my best.

"It is important for me to try and use games like the one against Rangers and Inter Milan to show that I can handle the pressure.

"They are big games with a lot of interest in them and I hope that I can do well in them because I think I have to prove that I can perform to that kind of standard.

"The next few weeks will give me a chance to try and ensure I am going into them fully fit

Since he couldn't sign until he was at least 18 (November last year?) and we still haven't seen confirmation of a work permit (not to mention he's injured and out until March) I can't see why you even included him in your list.

It sounds like a player who wants to come back to City, & he won't be daft enough to think he'll be first choice, so I'd have to say kind of yes.

In most interviews he gives no indication about wanting to remain at Celtic or be on loan next season & is always talking about learning so he can get back to City, but he knows that the Premier League is another level, so he's got a lot of work to do .

BigOscar - there are 2 reasons that Boyata was given a new contract - 1he is a competent defender - 2 City have nearly no home grown players and Boyata is home grown and so fulfills that category. Even if the other players were better he would have still been given a contract and included in the official named squads.

You can't recall players from season long loans to another English Premier League club.

edited for accuracy.

Nothing stops us recalling Lopes, Denayer, Guidetti, Rekik, Zuculini or any other EDS player at any time we wish, since none of them are on loans to clubs in this division.

Not sure how many times people need these supposed "quotas" explained to them. We don't need any homegrown players, club trained of otherwise.
