This could be a very complicated deal indeed......He's had a real taste of first team football and, frankly,he took has taken to it very well.....he has also shone in a couple of Internationals......obviously he is in a position where he deserves regular football at a high level, can we offer it him? would he be content as 4th option? i'm unconvinced.I believe the only option we have is the five year deal and another 12 month loan if he and his agent agree? we can then integrate him as Martin's replacement.

To be fair his agent is right our defence would be no weaker for having him in instead of Demichellis or Mangala. Time for Demichellis to take a step back he looked knackered at the end of the season and the copa America wouldn't have helped. Our centre backs should look like

1. Kompany
2. Mangala / Denayer
3. Denayer / Mangala
4. Demichellis

I think you've confused Demichelis with Kompany, although he didn't play in the Copa America.

I didn't watch much of the Copa America because of the time difference but I watched the final and Demichelis was superb (as were both defences). I haven't seen Denayer play yet. He may well be of great potential but don't compare him already to some of the top defenders in the game. He needs games and experience, as a back up to our Premiership squad. Possibly games in the Cups

He hasn't.
Martin did indeed nosedive towards the end of the season.Personally i'd have released him.
In that case, personally I think you're an idiot.

Our best defender last season, the only one who's really comfortable with Pellegrini's system and all our other defenders look more comfortable playing alongside him, than Kompany, because of this. And you'd release him?

I agree,up until the final few games,he was outstanding last year......but,yep,i do believe he's on the wane and he's blocking the pathway of an immensely talented youngster.

How would you feel if we lost Denayer due to this extension?

We won’t. Regardless of personnel, we require 4 centre backs in our first team squad. Kompany and Mangala are clearly going to be 2 of the 4. If we’re saying Denayer will be the third, which I think he should, then there still needs to be one other. Do you think Denayer would believe he’s got more chance of game time if Demichelis is that 4th centre back, or if we were to release Demichelis and bring in another, say Otamendi for example?

With Mangala on the young side, there’s no way we wouldn’t bring in an experienced centre back to replace Demichelis if he was released. What chance do we have of finding someone experienced and good enough to step in for Kompany if he’s injured, but that wouldn’t demand the sort of game time that would hinder Mangala’s progress, never mind Denayer’s? And how much of our summer budget would said player cost? And what if he didn’t settle well?

Keeping Demichelis is the simplest decision we’ve ever had to make.

I’m sure Denayer will be on the tour with the intention of him taking on Boyata’s role at a minimum. The issue is getting him on the pitch when we have 2 excellent center backs in VK and MDM and big money invested in Mangala who is 4 years older and has more experience and also great potential. Denayer will know this and his concern will be around how little Boyata played.

I would imagine they could get round this by 1, putting some options in his contract (in his favour) around playing time/games etc (i.e. a release clause that only applies if he does not hit a minimum amount of playing time) and 2, pointing out that all top teams have roughly 2 players for every position and that MDM is in his final year making him potentially 4th choice this year and 3rd choice next year i.e. he has a great chance of breaking through to 1st / 2nd choice over the next 2 to 3 years.
