Correct. Milner has to do what is best for him. It's a shame if that doesn't coincide with what's best for us as well but it's his career and probably his last big contract, so he'd be a fool not to make the most of it.

Maybe it's about playing time, maybe it's money, maybe he just fancies trying somewhere abroad, maybe he feels the current offer isn't good offer. The reason at the end of the day matters little. Players look after their own interests before that of the club just as clubs put their own interests above those of the player.

Jimmy: Liverpool want me and i want to go boss.

Txiki: No problem Jimmy but do us a favour, sign the deal so we get a transfer fee and of course we will ensure you get your cut of it so you dont lose out and you get your move. Everyones happy.

It really is this simple!

He will do whatever he thinks is best for James Milner. It really is that simple.

He could have guaranteed the club £10m though by signing a new contract with the understanding that if a bid was met he was free to talk to a club. £10m for a premier league winner is dirt cheap in todays market.

It leaves a sour taste to be honest, this club gave him the best years of his career, if it wasnt for city he would still be running round like a headless chicken at Villa.

Which is all well and good but doesn't mean that as City fans we can't be a bit disappointed that it's been allowed to pan out like this.
Whilst I'm very much in the camp that appreciates what he's brought to us since his arrival and hopes that any potential move works out for him - I can't help but think he's led us a bit of a merry dance and most likely wasn't going to sign any new contract and has known for a fair few months.
I'm already over him leaving tbh, I just hope that any replacement brought in has real quality and not just somebody who fits our HG quota..

I get that but it doesn't equate to him behaving honourably.

He's behaved honourably by fulfilling the terms of his contract. That is his only duty to us. Other than that he has to look out for his own interests.

Let's say for example, he signs a new deal next week, we end up signing a few new players in the Summer and he gets pushed down the pecking order and doesn't even make the bench. He gets forgotten about and instead of attracting Liverpool, Inter and Valencia, he now gets offers from Sunderland and QPR. He would have done himself a great disservice and he must realise that it is a very possible scenario.

Of course I would prefer him to sign a new contract as that is what is best for the club I support. But I can understand full well why he wouldn't do that and that he has to put his own interests first.

Did City behave honourably with Nastasic?

Why is it that whenever these scenarios about him staying are painted they are always through the context of him never kicking a ball for us again? The truth is that he's been here 5 years played under 2 managers and has been used in a similar fashion throughout his time. There is NOTHING in the way he's been utilised this season to suggest anything other than that he is a very valuable member of the squad to Pellegrini and the club.

It's fine to characterise him as being someone who is looking out for himself, he is. But lets stop pretending that he's ever been some downtrodden Scott Sinclair/Nastasic type who never gets a look in, or that that is definitely what his future holds at City.

I see both sides here if im honest.

For me though he should sign his deal, make sure we get a fee for the lad.

Bang on the money.

He would be incredibly stupid to do that. As a free agent a club can take him on without any transfer fee and he'll be a cheap signing for them and as such he'll be able to request a large signing on bonus and higher salary than he would be able to command if there were a transfer free.

He may be boring but I doubt he's stupid.

THIS.

Football agents and clubs are not stupid and neither is JM, whereas a lot of fans clearly are. This whole idea that we would give him a bit of the fee is complete balls. There is no reason at all JM or any other remotely intelligent individual would agree to that. He is in the last 6 months of his deal therefore entitled to talk to other clubs and if they are willing to pay a fee in the summer to city then they would also be willing to pay it direct to him as a free agent.

Can anyone on here seriously suggest that if you were in his position and new there was a potential multi £m pound fee on offer in the summer you would sign a contract with City and take yourself out of the negotiating driving seat.

He could have signed his contract, got us our fee and come out of it with his move and money in the bank along with the memories that as a club we gave him his big chance and he walks with PL winners medals, CC winners medal and FA cup winners medal and fans more than happy with what he did for us.

He knew full well what club wants him and he will know full well what they have asked him to do which is shaft us by not signing and they will grease his and his agents palms for doing so.

In my book, that is cuntish behaviour, sorry and I really do like Jimmy as a player.

Did City behave honourably with Nastasic?

Paying him for doing fuck all, I'd say yes they did.

Right so despite clearly freezing him out because he refused to move to a club he didn't fancy in the summer, the club behaved honourably merely by honouring the terms of his contract ie paying him until they finally managed to force him out of the club. Well in that case Milner has behaved honourably too by honouring his contract but doing no more or less for the club. Basically as fans we want it all ways. If we want rid, players should just fuck off as soon as we say so or they're greedy bastards who are more interested in City's money than playing football. If they want to leave to play more football but we want them to sign (just to get us a transfer fee) then they are bastards for the complete opposite. It's utter fucking nonsense.

While seemingly 'in the driving seat' didn't Bony renegotiate his contract in order that his club gained the maximum leverage from any potential deal?
