While seemingly 'in the driving seat' didn't Bony renegotiate his contract in order that his club gained the maximum leverage from any potential deal?

Yes well done him, quite rare in football these days doesn't mean anyone who doesn't do the same is a greedy c**t or a dripping twat or whatever else has been said about Milner in this thread.

With respect what's rare is players leaving on a free, not players signing new contracts only to be sold.

When players sign a contract extension and are then sold they're usually youngish players who are starting to attract attention. They're not on big money so the deal is that they get a huge pay rise, security if it all goes wrong, the club gets an eventual fee. Its mutually beneficial. Are City offering Milner a big pay rise?

I reckon players signing contracts just so when they're sold the club gets a fee is probably fairly rare. Although according to a poster a page or so back even Bony didn't do it for that reason, he supposedly did it because he was offered a large wedge of cash and decided it was a good option for himself.

This:- He took a big cash lump sum in a deal to surrender his release clause, I don’t think he was trying to do the club a favour, I think he negotiated what he thought was a good deal at the time and chose to take the cash that was on the table, again, if a lot of us where in his position we would do the same.

No one will deny Bony didn't have his own interests at heart, however,it was also mutually beneficial.....so why cant our Jimmy do similar?

That Bony talk makes sense

Swansea probably offered him a couple of million to sign a new deal, knowing they could then get an extra £10 million for him on the market as his release clause was only £18 - £19 million up until him signing

Clever on Swansea's part, it appears they were one step ahead of the game, unlike us with the Milner deal

Presumably because it's not mutually beneficial to do so. Who's to say he would still get his desired move if a £10 million fee is involved? It's a risk that I can understand him not wanting to take.

Because in his particular circumstances it presumably doesn't suit him to do so whereas in Bony's circumstances it presumably did. It's not that he can't do it, just there is no requirement for him to do it. He is being selfish but not abnormally so in my opinion, it is his work and he is doing what I reckon a huge percentage of people would do. I don't get any pleasure from saying that because to us it is difficult to see it as just their job because we are so emotionally invested but from his point of view, he's just a bloke (Leeds fan) doing a job. If I was a footballer playing for anyone other than City I guess I could well be the same. Sadly I was always utterly shit.

We did it with Adam Johnson, United did it with CRonaldo, Spurs did it with Bale...all clubs knew they were going to sell the players, made them sign new contracts, then asked for more money in the transfer fee as a result.

No player is made to sign a contract, they do it if it is in their best interest (admittedly with advice from agents which may be suspect). We also don’t know what is in these contracts, release clauses or agreements to split fees etc. Players do what is best for them and it is entirely understandable. The worst a club can do is freeze out a player which is a situation with no winner.
