We could always sign him on a four year deal, but send him off to NYCFC for a swansong after three years.
If the only issue is an extra year then I find it very odd this whole thing isn't sorted by now. Give him the 4 years, we get to keep a dedicated good squad player who can play in multiple positions and in 2-3 years we can sell him on if needs be. It's literally a no brainer.

Lurking mainly, having just finished packing for a week away.
