Joao Cancelo

We have 2 natural left backs plus Zinchenko, who is now first choice. Why would we play a RB there when we have fewer right backs than left backs?

FYI Cancelo as barely ever been used on the left. Far less than Danilo has.
Because: Angelino had a great () preseason and Mendy is either injured or applying for pensioners benefits... so, yes... I'd suit up a player who is a natural back who can play the LB position.

"João Pedro Cavaco Cancelo (born 27 May 1994) is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays for Italian club Juventus and the Portugal national team. Mainly a right back, he can also play as a right winger or a left back. Regarded as a promising player in the media, Cancelo is mainly known for his speed, energy and offensive capabilties, as well as his technical skills, creativity and crossing ability. He is capable of playing as a full-back or winger on either flank, although he usually plays on the right."

Mendy isn't available for some time, Zinchenko is probably better than Angelino but Cancelo is arguably going to be better than either.
He probably will be, but he'll still play at RB.

Angelino had a great pre season? Not sure about that, looked very rusty, slow and sloppy when i saw him.

Sorry pal, I didn’t realize you were being sarcastic.

To all saying Cancelo won't play at LB:
Let's say (on the) Mendy misses 10 games straight coming up (not exactly a wild stretch of the imagination), or the next time he has a health induced vacation of, say, 10 games:
Walker barring injury plays 7 out of those at RB, Cancelo plays the balance of 3.
In those 7 games where we have Angelino and Zinch... You're telling me Cancelo will not feature in at least a few of those?
We aren't buying him so Bernie can keep his colloquial Portuguese sharp.

I think he's a great upgrade on danilo and only paying nearly 28m for a 60m rated player is fantastic business in my opinion.
Imminent, bags packed, hand luggage scanned and sat on the tarmac isn't he?

FiveLive have just caught up with this, reporting that City have opened negotiations to sign Cancelo with Danny going the other way

sorry joao, on current form walker keeps his place

Not sure you can describe one competitive game as 'current form'. Walker was our best player yesterday, he was incredible, and if he keeps that up he'll be starting all season, but here's the thing with Walker: it's impossible for him to keep it up. He runs so much that if he's not properly rotated he'll be shattered by December again.

Let's see how Cancelo fairs in his first few apps before deciding who's got RB nailed down yet.

Some are underestimating Cancelo here, Walker will have fight on his hands to keeps his spot. Maybe not immediately but once he settles.

You should always improve the squad from a position of strength to avoid overpaying. Walker will soon be a few years older and we’d be getting quoted all sorts to replace him. Cancelo is younger and keeps the squad healthier medium term. We can now focus on other areas over the next few years instead of worrying about RB.

We shouldn't forget we want to have 2 top players for any position to go Pep's high intensity in any match throughout the season, by rotation.

It's not about Walker or Cancelo! They can't play every 3 days high intensity, no player can.
We already said last year that our squad depths could decide the title race.
And we have seen how tough it was - even without playing CL semis and final...

We want it all and we need 2 solutions for any position.
Pep only has to decide who of the 2 will start in the big match and who plays the cup match 3 days after.
That's the choice. And the competiton.

i suppose what i meant was it would be unfair to drop him, as it looks like he's carried on his good form from the end of last season

You do realise that walker only turned 29 in May and has a few years in him left at the top.

We should be looking to upgrade at every available opportunity if we want to remain on top so I’m al for it. But unless Cancelo has similar attributes to Walker, with his pace, covering and 1v1 defending, I don’t see the amount of games Walker plays drastically changing with this signing. He’s simply too crucial to our anti-counter tactics for him to sit out any of the big games.
