I don't think he is in the poor category but he isn't world class either. He is a good keeper but seems reluctant to change his style and hasn't improved a huge amount since he first started. English keepers, like many English players don't ever seem to improve very much and get up to the next level. When did we last have a world class English player who got consistently better as time went on.

It's harsh on him after his service but so far I am liking what I am seeing from Pep especially his ruthless streak, which we have been missing. I also like the team spirit which was missing last season.

It's going to be a very exciting and interesting few seasons with this fella in charge.

OK

I'll go on the record now. I think Joe is a poor goalkeeper.

And I can back that up with proven statistics. We all know he has a glaring weakness on his bottom left hand side. Something that should have been eradicated a long time ago for a keeper playing at the level he has been.

His distribution is horrific. Even his long kicking, which is the British way, is poor. This is the main reason.

He also punches crosses/corners he should be collecting. Far too often.

Now, he's one of the best one on one shot stoppers I have ever seen, and I'm not going to take that away from him, but it's clouding people's judgement and making a section of city fans believe he's a world class keeper. He isn't. Never has been.

When he has a good day he's quality, Messi alluded to this as did Suarez.

However as a whole package it's never been good enough.

The non footballing reasons have been exhausted on here but I think there is a decent argument for the football side if one was required.

He's served a lot of years here so you could argue about the morality of it all and whilst I don't usually relate money to footballers (we are all human ), he's not done too badly out of us, has he?

You make a good point re Joe punching when he should catch it - he seemed to do that more and more last season. There were numerous times during games where he could have claimed possession and taken the pressure off of us - but he punched and added to the pressure - I remember him doing it late in the game in Paris.

I do feel for Joe - he is a product of Englsh football - and sadly he (like most English keepers) is a very old fashioned shot stopper - who has not developed any real footballing skills - its noticable that our keepers always train together away from the main squad - it will be interesting to see if Pep includes our keepers in the main group.

I know I am being devils advocate here Harry, but if he is up there with the best, why isn't there a queue of top teams looking to secure his services?

Joe is a very good keeper, but too many are simply throwing it out there that he is WC and one of the best, and he has too many weaknesses to be categorised as such. Sorry, but that's the way I see it.
Sevilla and Borussia Dortmund inquired from overseas but Hart isn't interested in going abroad. Liverpool enquired in April and Everton are currently in.the box seat

Do you mean pre match warm up or "train" ? Pre match warm up, probably needs a different set of tasks for a keeper, than it does for an outfield player.

If you do mean training, then I'd be interested to know how often you watch training, because the very few clips we get to see show them training together.

I think he already has. Perhaps someone could confirm this.

It's a very black and white mentality. Very British. You try explaining to the majority that being able to do more than just keep the ball out of the net as a keeper, and you'll likely be looked at as though you have 4 eyes.

Danny Murphy, a former professional, had the very same attitude on MOTD last night. This time it was Liverpool, and them 'getting into trouble' for passing out from the goalkeeper. Apparently this won't work in the PL.

For a long time now this league has become more and more continental. As a consequence a lot of British players have fallen behind. We'd do well to follow another blueprint and embrace the change instead of fighting it.

Pep will finish what has been started here, make no mistake. The whole division, not just us.

And this is all relative to goalkeeping in that Joe has failed to take on board any advice or attempt to modify his game.

The fourth goal yesterday proved Pep's point. It went from Willy playing it out from the back, passing it forward to score a goal in seconds. Made me laugh pundits in this country saying it can't work in the premier league well it does. I watched other games yesterday where the keeper launches it long and most times they lost possession. I wish Joe all the best but it's clear we need a keeper that has already perfected this art to play in this system. Of course none of us know the truth but I agree with Proy that this is about moving on anyone who is not willing or able to buy into his ideas. His system relies on everyone undertaking the exact role he wants. Its always sad when one of our favourites is moved on, but we need to support Pep 100%. I think we can already see he is beginning to create something very special here.

I'm aware that it's clearly nothing to do with who's the better keeper, I was just making a throw away comment to someone saying Joe was more than capable of putting in that level of kicking performance that Willy produced yesterday.
It's looking increasingly clear that Pep has told Joe privately 'sorry kidda you're done'. That's fine, it's the decision of one of the best managers going, my point remains though that, unlike what many on here would have you believe, this doesn't make Joe a shit keeper, just surplus at our club.
If he goes to the candle lighters, he'll improve them and I for one would be gutted to see him in their shirt.
I was pretty gutted when we lost Miner to them till I realised it doesn't matter. I won't be surprised if Silva is shown the door next summer. I would be proper gutted like many, but the Samaritans will be busy with some of the drama queens on here if it happened! ; )
