Hart is a good keeper but he has too many flaws in his game to ever be considered a great one

He is home-grown and provides a link between the old and new city, which is why there is such affection for him

However, there is no room for sentiment in professional sport, if we can get someone without these flaws then we will move the team forward to the next level

There is no way he will be able to develop his game to the level that Pep will need, he is hopeless with the ball at his feet, which in the main is caused by his lack of composure

Sure he may shout and ball but he often creates panic and confusion which leads to some comedy goals conceded.

If we can get £40m for him then we should cash in, didn't De Gea have a £30m clause inserted into his contract last year when he re-signed?

To those that are criticising his distribution, have you ever compare him to other Prem keepers? It's interesting looking at the passing stats, as Joe is really no worse than anyone else in the league especially when you consider he lacks a target man to aim for on kick outs.

I agree with the point about our players moving into space to give him decent options, it's a two way thing. Same thing applies on corners, the kick taker always gets the criticism which ignores the lack of movement in the box and it also happens with wide players getting criticism for delivery when they've no one to deliver to in the box.

That's a very good excuse. Doesn't work for me. There are players in space, not every single players is man marked - I was watching England and there were players in as much room as I've seen Barcelona players be under Pep with Valdes pinging a 30 yard crossfield pass right to the feet of Alves for example. Movement is crucial, but an accurate pass is more so. Our players can move all over the pitch if they like, but Hart would still potentially kick it out into touch. At the end of the day if short 5 yard passes is all the keeper needs to do then that's fine, but to get attacks going he'll need to find players in more advanced positions and in space. The goalkeeper becomes such a crucial extra man under Pep. His role enables the outfield 10 to overload the opposition and create chances by doubling up in positions and switching the ball from side to side. Pep needs a keeper that allows his tactics to be properly implemented and whilst movement will help I think it's foolish to think Hart currently is good enough to distribute the ball the way Pep would expect.
Great post, one that provides the reasoning, and an understanding, behind a possible replacement for Joe.

I like and rate him,he is a part of the fabric and what he does best, there aren't many better.....but he does have his weaknesses,as stated above, and if we can find a superior replacement, who offers us the opportunity to play a more fluid brand of football,i'm all in.

How do the Wizards of BM know this? Pep likes a sweeper-keeper? The best two of recent times were Valdes and Neuer, neither of whom were Guardiola acquisitions, but both established number 1's when he took over. Maybe his strength as a coach is getting the best out of what he has? If he has keepers who are going to be leaving their line regularly and often, he can harness that to best effect. We will see how he approaches having one that doesn't.
It will be a test of Pep's coaching ability I guess.
All I know is that coming off the line, catching a ball and playing the ball with his feet are not attributes I have ever seen Joe display.
As you say, Valdes and Neuer are naturals at this as is Ter Stegen. If it is true Everton are prepared to pay 40mill for Joe and we could come out with Ter Stegen and 20 mill in pocket then I can see this being a v attractive prospect for Pep rather than trying to re-train a keeper at doing things he's never done.

I agree 100% if we can get a top class replacement like Ter Stagen, and £20m, that better suits Peps way of playing and given Hart has always had certain limitations, that have never got any better and under Pep are likely to be magnified 10 fold. I think Pep and City would take that deal. I know that on Bluemoon I will be in a massive minority but Pep has been chased by our owners for years now to come here and do what he does best and I for one do not see Joe Hart being an easy fit with the Pep way.

So the media darling is joining the rags and then stories like this appear. We will have shit like this all summer whereas the rags are signing every bugger going for peanuts and no wages. £40m for England's number 1, are you having a laugh and why would Joe go there!

I'm sure Joe will be retained at least initially to see if he can carry out a sweeper role in the way we've seen Neuer progress. It's whether he can do that and be effective for the team without losing his primary ability as a shot stopper. I can see the situation arise where we get a goalkeeper in that is extremely effective with the ball but prone to more errors than Hart but the goalkeeper is a huge part of Pep's tactics and indeed Germany at the last world cup relied a hell of a lot on Neuer playing as a sweeper whilst the rest of the side played a high line. It essentially meant any ball over the top had to be pinpoint accurate, far enough behind the defence for their attackers to get there but not too far that the keeper can get the ball easily. Not many players out there can play that ball.
