Again,i agree, and this may even translate to the entire defence.....'footballers' ahead of traditional strong arm defenders.I'm sure Pep will want 11 players who are comfortable and composed on the ball, the goalkeeper in such a team is essential to that idea, hopefully Joe can step up and be that man but,i believe, from the evidence so far....he will struggle.I'm sure Joe will be retained at least initially to see if he can carry out a sweeper role in the way we've seen Neuer progress. It's whether he can do that and be effective for the team without losing his primary ability as a shot stopper. I can see the situation arise where we get a goalkeeper in that is extremely effective with the ball but prone to more errors than Hart but the goalkeeper is a huge part of Pep's tactics and indeed Germany at the last world cup relied a hell of a lot on Neuer playing as a sweeper whilst the rest of the side played a high line. It essentially meant any ball over the top had to be pinpoint accurate, far enough behind the defence for their attackers to get there but not too far that the keeper can get the ball easily. Not many players out there can play that ball.
Doesnt seem to be all that important any more.I haven't seen all that much of Ter Stegen, apparently he's a great passer but just curious, how is he at keeping goal? Anyone?
OK he gave us the chance of getting to the semis. 1 pen save + 6 fabulous saves in the games against PSG Says he did more than anyone else to get us there.Hart did not get us to the semis. It's a team game and he is 1/11 of that team. The team took us to the Semi's
Totally disagree. One they didn't get the space you say they did, and, Two only one England defender (Rose) is really good enough on the ball to pass the ball forward. That's a very good excuse. Doesn't work for me. There are players in space, not every single players is man marked - I was watching England and there were players in as much room as I've seen Barcelona players be under Pep with Valdes pinging a 30 yard crossfield pass right to the feet of Alves for example. Movement is crucial, but an accurate pass is more so. Our players can move all over the pitch if they like, but Hart would still potentially kick it out into touch. At the end of the day if short 5 yard passes is all the keeper needs to do then that's fine, but to get attacks going he'll need to find players in more advanced positions and in space. The goalkeeper becomes such a crucial extra man under Pep. His role enables the outfield 10 to overload the opposition and create chances by doubling up in positions and switching the ball from side to side. Pep needs a keeper that allows his tactics to be properly implemented and whilst movement will help I think it's foolish to think Hart currently is good enough to distribute the ball the way Pep would expect.
