Paddy Barclay on the paper review thinks Hart "is over confident"...

I think Joe Hart is far from over confident. He's trying to give that impression as it's probably the way he deals with it, but the decisions he's making on the pitch tell you his confidence is shot.
When an outfield player is struggling for form you encourage them to keep it simple and get back to basics. Short passes not looking to play the 'hollywood' ball.
Hart is trying too hard to right previous wrongs.
Personally I don't think he's ever really recovered from the public criticism he got off Mancini following the defeat at Southampton.
I truely believe Joe Hart will be an outstanding goalkeeper in time. However he needs time to ponder. He isn't really threatened by Pants because he he knows he's never gonna be long term solution.
When Given was here that was a different case. Training must have been really intense. Hart needs that intensity back!

Just do what you do with any player who under performs.. put them on the bench for a bit..

Im no rocket scientist but if carlsberg did samharris quotes......

It a funny thing with keepers. Look at him body language and you will see - he is soooooooo low on confidence. He doubts himself and that is the core of the problem. He has not become a worse keeper. He has been knocked down and I for once think he will never climb up. At least not in this club. Mentally he is not good enough. But who do you get instead? I would love to get Neuer, but that will never happen? Casillas? Still decent but hardly a world beater any more. It will be interesting to see who are we going to get. There is no doubt in my mind that we will get a keepers in January
Itransfer window.

Its sad for Joe but I fear you are correct if we make a move for a new keeper in the coming transfer window then Joe is history. He will need to leave and find a new club to try and resurrect his career. His England place will also come under serious pressure in the not to distant future and his fall from grace may still have a longer way to go. I hope he is dropped (and not 'rested') for his own sakes. To take him out of the firing line and so he can have time to reflect on where and how he needs to put things right and then hopefully come back stronger. However he now has a reputation for dropping clangers which he is unlikely to shed - just like David James. A very good keeper (not great) but always with a major clanger in him waiting to happen.
And its sad to think not so long ago against Dortmund at the Etihad one night he put in a truly breath taking, world class performance to single handedly stop us from being on the wrong end of what would have been a very severe and hugely embarrassing result with 6 or 7 genuine brilliant saves.
Just where did it all go wrong for him?

Well, I surely don't know and I doubt he knows himself TBH. I remember that game, he was awesome ... bit it has been overshadowed by the recent performances. Every game he makes me feel uncomfortable. Every cross, shot, chip or pass in the box and I am thinking what is going to happen next? I am sure I am not the only one to feel that way. His team mates must have this on the back of their mind too. I would much rather now have an average keeper who will not pull outstanding saves but be steady and give some confidence to the back four.

I fear for him. I really liked him, but based on the last 12 months he has no place in this team.

My biggest concern in all of this is that Joe is not going to be replaced by Pants because Pants has gotten significantly better but rather that Joe has gotten considerably worse.

In all honesty, I'm not too worried about Costel playing in goal. I think he'll do fine. I'm more worried about Joe being so shit right now. What happened. Where's his head gone? Will he ever sort himself out?

I do think it's time to give Hart a break. I don't think Pantilimon is the better choice overall (like some on here), just the better choice at the moment. Let Joe sort his head out on the sidelines. It will do him some good to be humbled sitting on the bench for a couple of games. When he does get back in, he'll be out to prove to everyone why he's England's number one. If he doesn't...the he gets dropped again.

If Costel plays on Saturday then he has to stay in the side providing he doesn't make errors on the same scale that Hart has been making.

Its complete nonsense to suggest that Hart needs to be humbled, At the moment his problem is the exact opposite, his confidence is shot to pieces. Dropping him for a couple of games will not improve that and will only increase the pressure on him if/when he does return. How exactly does he "sort out his head on the sidelines"? Isn't it much more likely that sitting on the sidelines will scramble his brains even more?

The vibes in the press seem to suggest that Costel will play at Newcastle and against Norwich. That's a reasonable call for the manager to make. But if he does play Costel against Norwich it has to be on the basis that he's now our number one choice as goalkeeper. He keeps the job unless he makes similar mistakes, proves that he's not up to the job. Or until we buy a better keeper than both of them in January.

Dropping Hart is not a short term measure. If he's dropped the chances are that it's permanent.

I'm starting to feel that it's time to 'circle the wagons' on this in the face of overwhelming criticism in the press and media of Hart. I think this is more than a dip in form given that its gone on for such a long time and it's time for a change, however, it's a bit like one of your kids fucking up on something. I might have a go at him/her as their father, but nobody else is allowed to.

If Joe Hart's mental state is that fragile then he has no place in top level, professional sport.
To be honest I think Hart's form has dipped considerably since Mancini left. We did hear rumours that if Mancini had stayed he was looking to replace Hart in the transfer window just gone. Possibly now we know why he was thinking of that. Defensively Mancini was a class act - even his biggest critics have to admit that. He obviously saw and new about Joe what we are all seeing now. And before anyone chimes in lets not forget it was Mancini who put his balls on the line when he brought in Joe over Shay Given and gave him his chance. Agent Clueless was looking to off load Hart for peanuts just before he got the bullet. Hence Mancini knows Hart probably better than any other top level manager.

I think it is much easier for a goalkeeper to shine when he is being bombarded. There is not much pressure in 1 to 1 situations and brilliant shots: if you save them you are a hero, if you don't nobody expected you to anyway! Plus you are in the game for 90 minutes and mentally you are ready to act.

I think it's easy for a goalkeeper to become a hero when bombarded since there is not much pressure mentally. Nobody expects you to save one on one situations, brilliant shots or penalties. IF you do though you are a hero. Plus you are kept in the game for 90 minutes, warm and mentally ready.

The real difficulty is when you are not in the game because you play for a dominant team and need to act a few times in a match. your first save might come 20 minutes into the game and you might need to act three times in a whole match, if that. mentally that is frustrating and might affect your decision making. And the great goalkeepers that play for top top sides can manage that. In my opinion Casillas (who is short for a modern goalkeeper) was never anything special physically. It's his decision making, positioning and mentality in general that made him a great goalkeeper. Now, you can teach positioning I guess but can you teach decision making? Not sure.

Anyway that's what our team needs, a goalkeeper to be consistent and stable rather than brilliant every now and then; and as much as I love Joe because he is a great lad I'm starting to question whether he can be that man, mentally...

It could have been worse
