Biggest difference between Lineker and Barton is that Lineker mostly calls out people in power, while Barton just punches downwards. Shouldn't be surprised though, it's how he's always been.

I'm not sure what part of history you believe existed where people had greater freedom from being told how to behave or think than we do now. It wasn't that long ago this country chemically castrated men for being gay, forcibly adopted children of unmarried mothers, deported people for wanting to organise a trade union and jailed women for fighting for the vote. Having your opinion criticised or contradicted is not the same. That is healthy discussion.
