John Bond 1932-2012

Re: John Bond

John Bond we love you, John Bond we do...

Brought me some of my greatest memories as a City fan during his short time as City manager.

Competing against the rags, Tommy Hutchinson, Ipswich at Villa Park, FA Cup Final, Stoke City away, Trevor Francis, Gerry Gow, half a team of local lads, Norwich 6-0, Liverpool in the League Cup, Everton in the quarters, revitalising Joe Corrigan's career..

A true City managerial giant, who shouldn't be judged on how it all finished as his team was cut out from under him by an incompetent Chairman.

RIP John Bond.

Re: John Bond

Sad news.

He revalitised us so much in the 1980-1 season - was great for us at the time - we would definitely have stayed up had he stayed for the rest of the 1982-83 season. Have watched the 'City' documentary only recently and his desire and passion was there for all to see

RIP Bondy

Re: John Bond

RIP Mr Bond. Steadied the ship for a while, got us to Wembley but then made the fatal error of breaking up that team too soon. Still, his decision to quit was a surprise to everyone, even after that 4-0 thumping at Brighton.
Him and his mate/rival Big Fat Ron tried to pass themselves off as sophisticated, champagne-guzzling, big time charlies, bringing the swinging 60s and a touch of showbiz back to Manchester football, but looking back now they seem faintly ridiculous.
It's fair to say his old West Ham teammate Big Mal was not a fan of Bond's abilities

Agreed. He gave Allison's ailing team a huge shot in the arm and to turn things around like he did that season was nothing short of miraculous.

While I have other earlier City memories, as a 10 year old the 1980-81 season is the first season that I remember vividly and as such Bond was the first City manager I truly identified with.

RIP

Re: John Bond

First game I ever attended was under his management. The 4-0 cup win over Crystal Palace. And then I was at the 4-0 defeat at Brighton which bookended it.

Feels like part of my childhood has gone. Rest well John Bond.
