I found him quite repetitive. But that might be because he was the commentator on one of the FIFA games back in the day.

He was an excellent commentator. Have to disagree with him being the best, though.RIP, the best commentator in football.
It’s an insult to people like him, James Alexander Gordon and the staple voices of football commentary that they allow absolute tosspots like Carragher, Neville, McManaman and Murphy into the gantry these days.

Would never say he was my favourite commentator - bit too much of a stat man for me - but no doubt he was the voice of football for much of the 70s, 80s and 90s. Always hear his voice when Ricky Villa scored THAT goal and his longevity was quite remarkable. RIP.

Not a fan of his. He was decent enough during his early years at MOTD but I'd finally had enough of him when he went well over the top at Euro '84.
Loved it when Cloughie tore him a new one.
Barry Davies, David Coleman (Balls) and Brian Moore were my go to commentators.

Yes, Hugh Johns, he covered the midlands games.Yep. Certainly Davies and Moore were miles ahead of him. Not so sure about Coleman. I always thought Hugh Johns was a great commentator as well.
