John Motson dies aged 77

Ahh rest in peace Motty and your sheepskin coat, the backdrop to a lot of our youth for many of us growing up watching MOTD.

Couldnt tell one black player from another in the far corner.
Thought ‘ironically’ meant co-Incidently.
Always had that sheepskin.
A decent commentator, no favouritism. I liked him.

As said, not the best for me either, but still up there, without doubt fans of a certain age will have grown up recognising Motty and will have a lot of fond memories of him.

I think many fans of many ages grew up with the voice of Motson overlaying football, such was his longevity.

He wasn't the best, he was very far from the worst, but he had tonnes of personality.

In this YouTube clip Motty talks about our 81 FA cup final replay with fondness, not because he was a spurs fans, because it was such an exciting game for the neutral fan and spurs fans, obviously. Losing that final broke my heart but hey ho.

He had the quintessential football commentators voice which has been mimicked but never bettered.

Crimson Clive tribute to him made me realise how he uses it when he's doing it.

I have 2 lasting memories of him. One good, one bad.

The good one was the famous reporting in a blizzard for grandstand before a match.

The bad one can be left in another place today.
