Another centre back we have signed who is calamitous.

If you take away his "ability on the ball" you're not left with much, certainly not a top defender. Will end up being another central defender given away for frig all in 2 years time.

Wrong.... Stones didn't start a match in the Prem until Martinez himself gave him his chance in the second half of 2013/14 season. He had a decent first few months under Martinez, the manager who apparently ruined him according to some. This led to the ridiculous hype surrounding him, but he's been error prone ever since, under Martinez and now Pep. And we paid 50 million for him. Defies belief

overhyped english men like who ?. most english players get ripped to pieces by the media and fans. sterling, kane, barkley. stones have all been slaughtered by the press. would you rather he was called john stonio ? would he be good enough for you then ;)

There is a lot of work to be done on him but he is a good player. He is one of the few that genuinely cares if we win or lose.

Some may say Everton's defence suffered once Stones was introduced regularly. They were certainly much better in Martinez's first season where Stones only started 15 games. Finishing 5th in front of Tottenham and the Rags. So they weren't ruined by Martinez in his first season, but once Stones played more results went downhill. And Martinez carried the can eventually. He showed nothing in the main to be rated in the 50 million pounds region. Wasn't Baines injured quite a bit over recent seasons, not sure his form was all down to shitness under Martinez

We paid near world record levels for someone who had been poor for large parts of the previous 2 seasons. The fee was ridiculous for error prone Potential.....

There is a lot of work to be done on him but he is a good player. He is one of the few that genuinely cares if we win or lose.

Nobody is doubting his intentions, his capabilities as a defender in Pep's system are the issue.

then why did pep gaurdiola want him ? barca, city, chelsea were all heavily linked and definitly interested. if he showed nothing why where top clubs and managers after him.

Anyone would struggle playing next to Kolarov, Otemendi etc.

I'd argue no defender in earth could look good/improve in this system with the personnel. No real cover from midfield, full backs that don't cover or run back and are generally, regularly, out of position. Two senior centre backs that create chaos and a goalkeeper that, for one reason or another, doesn't save anything. This isn't really an environment for playing young players, no matter how much they cost

Get the defence right and the forwards will look after themselves
