Didn't work for me if I'm honest but it's a useful option to have to give Fernandinho a rest late on in games if we're comfortable.

Have to agree, after the cameo last game and tonight, it’s clear he’s not a DM and never will be but useful option to have in certain scenarios as you mentioned.

I thought he did well enough. I'd have Nico/Laporte as my top CB pairing and I think getting Stones some minutes at DM will improve him as a footballer, give Fern a rest, be useful enough, and will help balance out the minutes between our 4 cb's. I'd start him there again v Brighton.

He did well enough against the opposition, no disrespect to Oxford, but I'd only use him there against lower level teams or when closing out an already won game. He just doesn't have the mobility without the ball to shift teams around and make space for himself. Fair play to him, however, as that must be quite a hard position to play when you are so used to facing up the pitch and having everything in front of you.

@domalino

Continuing from our convo in the Foden thread..

What’s your stance on Stones logging minutes at the 6? You called for Phil/Bernardo/Gundogan vs Brighton. I called for Stones to start there vs Oxford. He should start there again imo. It’s too practical. Why open this can of worms and then end it? Makes no sense.

He's not a midfielder, it's really obvious looking at him IMO. If we're in an injury crisis and need someone to play out a nothing game, or see out a game, fine, but he's never going to be a serious option there.

agreed , hes a skilful cb,but that's miles away from what we want and need in there,under pep the dm must be one of the better passers in the team,john stones is great at the back but its a different ball game in the middle.
