If he decides to leave I wish him all the best like I did with Sane. No matter who we buy our defending will still be shocking because it is the major downside to Pep's system.

Champions League QF - two experienced CB on the bench and a ageing midfielder is selected ahead of you? That's your manager calling you shit and letting the team know that he thinks less of your ability to a job that your specialised in.

Same with Mendy too. We have 3 players we need to shift because Pep doesn’t trust any of them.

John Stones: "The result on Saturday has hurt us all deeply and is a tough one to take and accept. However, we assure everyone that we will do everything possible to come back stronger and make next season an even more successful one

John Stones: "Thank you to all of our fantastic #ManCity fans for the amazing support you’ve shown us this season

A total of 214 minutes since the resumption, two full games and two substitute appearances, which were all against weak teams. Not even in the squad for 15 games this season, not injury related, and only 49 minutes in 9 Champions League games.

Very much doubt we’ll see him in a City shirt again.
Based on his recent social media posts and comments he’s either trying *very* hard to reconcile with City fans ahead of a high profile move elsewhere so as to leave with some semblance of positivity or he is under the impression he will be with us next season.

FFS.

Two possibilities:

1. City aim to buy Koulibaly before telling John Stones he is no longer needed. The new season is still 3-4 weeks away so plenty of time to sort out any deals. The reason for this could be to avoid Napoli using Stones pricetag to jack up the price for Koulibaly. If we for instance got 40m for Stones, there’s no way they would let Kouliably go for anything below 70m considering the difference in quality. Napoli are hard as it is to negotiate with. No need to provide them with extra ammo.

2. Stones is actually staying, which makes no sense considering:

2.1. City were disappointed Garcia wants out. Imagine him staying and we’d have Laporte, Garcia, Aké and probably Koulibaly. That’s four CBs. No room for Stones.

2.2. Pep told the media 1-2 month ago that he and Stones would sit down and ”discuss his future. I want whats best for him”. That’s not what you say if you want to keep a player.

Neither scenario is logical to me, though I concede there is a chance he could remain. Must we been receiving some positivity counselling, so if he is indeed staying, I hope he shares the contact details.

Yeah, cannot comment on the logic from his perspective, only that those are the only viable explanations I can see for Stones’ recent posts/comments.

Well unless someone else is doing the posting for him. In which case it's pretty much what you'd expect a player to say in these scenarios regardless of future. Although if not I agree with your ideas.

Even if someone is posting for him (which is what I assume to be the case most of the time for his class of footballers) those are really the only two options.

It’s a “cover all eventualities but with mindful emphasis on reconciliation” PR strategy that I was alluding to and anyone managing his social media will have consulted with him on this specifically before implementing any sort of messaging plan (given the sensitivity of it versus merely posting after a “regular” match outcome or as part of sponsorship obligations).
