No. I would love if we went for VVD. I would have been ecstatic if we got Bonucci. I don’t know what the circumstances are, financial or otherwise, that have led us to JE, but he’s a solid central defender available at a reasonable price (maybe). And he’s much better than Mangala. And whatever about Vinnie’s injuries, if Stones loses form again, then JE is a no-brainer.
I agree with you about VVD, Bonucci and VK's potential injury problems.

However I can't see us getting Evans for a reasonable price. Pulis is treating the situation like a huge lottery win, £17m would be generous even allowing for the market.

IMO Evans is mediocre at best. If he wasn't home grown I don't think we would be considering him at all.

I would rather we had fewer quality flexible players, I am surprised Pep has not applied his ingenuity to adapting another player to act as cover, as he got Kolarov to do.

Okay, you may very well be right. My own view is that we will be in a vicious two-way fight for the title with mu. The margins will be tight. Does JE improve us overall? I think so. Maybe only marginally, but it may be the difference. Who’ll be laughing then?
Mate, I'm on your side. It's everyone else you need to convince.

Was he on your's? Were you even aware of his existence before he popped up on MOTD tonight. Did you advocate we buy VVD while he was still at Celtic? No, not many did, because you see, hindsight is a wonderful thing and it makes wise men out of fools until the next time.

100% agree. And even if someone had advocated VVD at the time, all we would have heard was the naysayers pointing out that he could only do it in a shit league but not good enough for a Champions League chasing team like us

Watched the the full matches of a couple of WBA games (vs Liverpool and Chelsea) -focusing on Evans- over the last couple of days whilst listening to my usual podcasts.
Some thoughts

PROS
1.) Organiser:
Constantly orchestrates WBA's backline, and this is something we don't have when Vinny isn't there. I'm not even sure Stones and Nico talk to eachother. Evans is very vocal.

2.) Positioning:
His positioning and sensing of danger is quite impressive tbh. Always looking around and behind him to make sure he doesn't lose sight of the forwards. Steps out when needed, covers well.

3.) Composure:
He's decent enough on the ball and looks for the pass rather than hoofing it but it's his composure in possession which stands out more. He's not like Mangala who looks like he's scared shitless when the ball comes to him.

(non playing)
4.) Homegrown

CONS
1.) Mobility:
Not hugely slow but he's not fast and he is quite wooden/lacking in agility, he's not someone you're confident can make up the ground once turned.

2.) Silly fouls:
Habit of giving fouls away by clattering into the back of an opponent. TBF this was only evident against Liverpool

(non playing)
3.) 30 in January
4.) Reported price is too high

Having studied him in these 2 games I've changed my mind somewhat. He looks a better player than he was at Utd, where he could be quite rash, he's matured as a player since then and is pretty steady. How he takes to a higher line and playing on the left of a back 3 at times - where he'd have to defend wide areas - I'm not sure but, on this evidence, he's a better player than I thought he was. His age means I wouldn't be going above £20m but I think I'd be fine with him being 4th CB.

Couldn't care less about him playing for Utd. It's hardly Crerand

We do need to make sure we sign that FW (Sanchez) tho for this to make sense, otherwise we should just take that money and put it on Van Dijk

Its hard to talk about what we have missed out on player wise since the takeover when it comes to defenders. Sure when we first signed Kompany we got a CDM cheap bargin that turned out to be a world beater. But the people we have tried to partner him with over the years has been mixed. Boyata, Nedum, Richards, Boatang, Savic, Garcia, Toure, Lescott, Demachelis, Ottamendi, Mangala and hopefully the best of the lot Stones. One player who was on my radar for years and my pals who I stand with in the South stand will back me up on this is Hummels. There was a time we could have got this guy on the cheap but obviously did not. Crazy in my opinion as he has always been class. Now obviously that ship has sailed and he is around 28-29 so not what we are looking for now but I honestly wonder why through all those years of recruiting the 12 players I mentioned above why he was not one of them.

My feeling is that Kompany may very well prove to be a weak link in this defensive lineup if he plays on the right not in the middle. If he does we'll be in a right mess.

Trying to keep out of posting in this thread as I fall into playing with 10 men rather than Jonny fucking Evans but to be fair to heatons he's probably got a job , our scouts have also got jobs but they don't seem to scout particularly well especially at Centre Back.

If this is purely about a back up player and home grown status, then really who else is available?? no one reaĺly.
I mean if not him only other 2 around that price range this season who have moved to new clubs and home grown we could have gone for instead earlier on are Michael Keane or Harry McGuire and would they have been any better? (would have had a punt on McGuire if honest)

I don't particulary want him and any price over £20 million is ridiculous, but if it happens then fair enough.

Just noticed Harry Maguire went to Leicester for an initial fee of £12,000,000. It knocks me sick that we're going in for Evans when we could have had Maguire. We'll probably sign Maguire in 3 years for silly money.

Funny that you're discussing Maguire! Just moved my post from the Everton pre-match thread to here. Maguire is a much better footballer, and it was a shame he was injured vs us at the Etihad. I was really looking forward to how he'd have handled our attack. He's got a very good future ahead of him.

If it was looking like we were looking for a HG centre back earlier on I too would have said get McGuire.

It's very funny that there was not one mention of Maguire before he was highlighted on MOTD.

When was this? haven't watched MOTD day tgis season yet last week was in Brighton so missed it and last night was out, just watching it now and the foxes haven't been on yet.

We will have done our homework and we still have Tosin who makes it 5. I cannot possibly imagine City have just pulled Evans out of the hat. I have 2 football agents as clients and both have told me of a company like OPTA who keep unbelievably detailed stats on every professional player in the world. Players can be graded & cross referenced down to the finest detail which gives clubs an indication of what a player's like before they take the time to monitor & scout them.

Trust me, we will have every available metric available on Evans and he must have been identified as our best option for the money. Last season we concentrated on the forward line, & this season it's the defence, but obviously Sanchez & Mbappe have forced us to make provisions for their availability, meaning we've probably had to lower our sights with the CB position based on the assumption that VK's fitness problems with his calves are over.

Either way, I seriously cannot see our club have done what we have this summer without it being a part of a bigger plan.

Was this not available to them when they purchased Mangala, Bony, I don't need to list the other flops but you get my point, you can't use that as a reason to big up Evans when it plainly has failed to spot all the other shite signings.

20-30m

Tyrone Mings 24yo
Craig Dawson 27yo
Ben Mee 27yo, solving all the home grown issues in a stroke no less.

If we were in need of this centre half all summer why did we allow Everton a free run at Keane an ex red but 5 years younger and with improvement still to come, fee 25m rising to 30m.

Also to base the Evans signing on the slight possibility that we sign Sanchez and Mbappe inside the next month is a bit of a joke in itself, if the case was FFP related it would be better no to waste the damned money on a player in the first place and maybe just maybe Pep can use his vaunted ability to make Tosin the centre half he desires, I mean he is a top coach, famed for plucking that German kid from the lower leagues and making him an international, get it done at City please.
