Jose Gimenez

Well Savic got away with it & he's shite.
Hence why I asked the Question. His youth gives him props. But when I watch him there is nothing exceptional about his game. He shows heart, but then again, he is from Uruguay, they all tend to show heart. And then he plays for Athleti, where everyone including the strikers work like crazy on defense. Can't say this is uniquely a function of his talent. But then again, at such a young age, you have to give him some props.

Pairing Gimenez with Stones makes more sense than Laporte if you think about it. Laporte and Stones are kind of similar, while Gimenez is a different type. More brutish.
Stones/Laporte = Pique
Gimenez = Puyol

Gimenez is fast and strong and a reader of the game - would probably be a leader next to someone like Stones - but he is very good on the ball as well.

Bonucci... But we aren't after him.

Gimenez isn't a ball-playing centreback, either. He is definitely closer to Otamendi than Boateng or Bonucci.

Completely disagree. He's definitely better on the ball than anyone we currently have, and he is a brilliant passer of the ball. Last season especially you'd quite often see him play lofted balls over the top for Griezmann or Torres to run onto. I haven't seen any but I'm sure any decent scouting video would have a compilation of his passing - one of the reasons he is so good is his well roundedness. He can do the skilful, on the ball stuff, but he's also incredibly fast and strong, and a beast in the air, and reads the game brilliantly.

Which is why he'd cost £50m+ and why Atletico won't let him go!

It's tough to judge.

Savic for example turns like an oil tanker & sticks his foot out, hoping, 1v1. He's shit. Atleti are a special case. It's hard to know how any of their defenders will do, in a different kind of team. You only find out, when they have to play in a different style. One might swim another might sink.

Slovakia have just kept out Sturridge, Vardy, Kane, Rooney etc but anyone think their defence would do the same if Pellegrini was in charge with the team playing playing 'his way' ? Or that Huth etc could have won the league playing in a Pellegrini team ?

A Pep cb is diffrent again of course.

I think Otamendi is a fair comparison.

Then you haven't watched one or both of them properly. Gimenez is a far better passer.
Sure. Outside of about 1/3 to half of Athletic's games this season and watching him live at Lincoln Center just a week or so ago, you are probably right. Then again, on the other hand, I've never seen Otamendi either. I mean if we ignore every game he played this season that is.

I don't care how many games you claim to have watched, You obviously weren't watching Gimenez closely if you think he's a similar level to Otamendi on the ball.

If we end up paying his 50m release clause and say 40m on Stones, add that to the 70m we spent on Otamendi and Mangala we will have splashed out over 150m on 4 CBs none of which you can claim are world class. Frightening.

Hard to get world class CB's from current clubs and hard to mold the ones we got into world class. Hopefully that changes now.

Kompany and Bonucci would be incredible. Unfortunately Vinny can't stay fit and Bonucci would be extremely difficult to get out of Juventus.

If Giminez and Stones both go on to be a world class partnership for the next ten years then I guess they will have proved to be worth the money.

There's no arguing with him @Dax777 — I've also watched him several times in the flesh, including recently in Phoenix where he was pretty poor against the side that went on to lose 7-nil to Chile in the Copa America (I'm in the US now, Santander be damned), and to me he is very much in the Puyol/Otamendi mould.

But, perhaps are eyes deceive us.

I've only seen one World class cb in recent years & that's a fully fit Vincent Kompany.

The rest who are so called world class all seem to have bits missing imo. Pepe is a fantastic defender but a brain fart. Boateng is great on the ball but a shithouse. Piquet is a big fanny.

Diego Godin is impressive but he plays for Atleti so there's no way to know how he would do in a more exposed team.

Signing central defenders is Russian Roulette.

I think Gimenez's game is made for the Premier League.

I agree with signing central defenders being Russian Roulette. Bayern were lucky they got Boateng cheap and was coached well, Alaba through the academy but they missed with Benatia(who we were linked with) and Javi Martinez hasn't been the greatest. We all know how Pep worked with Kimmich but he was brought in to be a first team player. Similar stories with other clubs as well. Focusing on how much is spent on defenders is straight out of media manipulation. Can look across all the transfer section and see how people react when we're linked with cheaper options.

Honestly, I kinda prefer we stay away from super big signings at CB. I think Mangala has all the physical attributes to be a top CB and think Pep can unlock his game. I think Pep can also make do with Ota and Denayer. Vinnie is top class but a huge injury risk. I don't think a lesser signing (lesser name) would be the most terrible thing at CB. Maybe I have too much faith in Pep.
