Jose Gimenez

Who would Gimenez (or Stones) replace if Mangala, Kompany, Ota and Denayer are in the squad??

Eliaquim Mangala is now set to stay at City this summer, after they failed to sign Aymeric Laporte. [Star]

I'm happy with this I actually like Mangala and feel he deserves a chance under Pep.

Sorry all...dont give me a hard time for it(just my opinion!) but I just dont see anything in Mangala's game that shows he's a Pep CB....if we end up going with Managla as our starting CB, its only because we missed on Laporte, Gimenez and Stones....The fact that our two main, long term targets have been central defenders and that we tried to loan him out last summer, shows the club dont have much confidence in him....He's big and strong and can man-mark a big and strong striker but he's never going to be the ball playing CB Pep wants and his reading of the game is poor...I'd keep him on the squad as a backup if someone gets injured but in my opinion, I dont want to see him anywhere near the starting 11....I guess I'm outnumbered in my view but just being honest!;)

Mangala reminds me of Boateng. Not necessarily great at defending, but athletic enough to be able to recover and sufficiently put someone off until help / cover arrives. He still needs to develop granted, but remember that Boateng stayed in the Bayern Team under Pep.

I can't think of two centre backs who are as different from each other with a similar physique. Mangala when in position is a very brave hugely impressive tackler with pace and a great leap. He gets caught out of position a bit. Unfortunately on the ball he is uncomfortable in possession and a poor distributor.

Boateng is fairly big and fast but not great in the tackle or particularly brave .
When in possession though he is very calm and has great distribution.

I think Mangala is often unfairly criticised by the pundits , particularly when he has no defensive help from Kolarov but I don't think he will ever be similar to Boateng as a player.

I think both Mangala and Otamendi will be much improved under Pep. They were both left horribly exposed by the way we were set up last season.

You only have to look at Smalling at the scum for evidence that if you set up and organise things correctly at the back (which Turtle did in fairness) then you can look solid. Thing is, Smalling is fucking awful yet because the set up protected him and his CB partner, he was being lauded as world class by some observers.

Mangala is light years ahead of Smalling in natural ability and, under the right coach, will be a good defender going forward. All the raw materials are there.

Pube head called smalling one of the top 3 centre backs in the world the other day... Oh how I laughed l...

He isn't even in the top 3 in Manchester ffs!!!

I think being black is where their commonality ends. But again, just opinions.

Apparently City has been linked with Gimenez as a Laporte backup plan. He plays for Atletico. I personally am delighted with this as I'm a big fan of him, a young and up and coming CB. And any defender that comes out of Atletico's system must be good.

Please be true!
