He did leave them. He resigned last November when the previous MLS season ended. He was reportedly looking for a position as a head coach in Europe in his own right so wasn't regarded as a candidate to become Pep's assistant. He'd probably have had himself fixed up somewhere for the 2020/21 season had it not been for COVID 19.

It feels like a good appointment and he will certainly get more coaching expertise input into the mix than if he had appointed a Zaba or a Vinnie. Their time will come though.
