My problem with Rice is that he doesn't offer enough going forward.
He would have been a much better option than Kalvin but watching him try to do what Gundo or Bernardo do would be like listening to Harry Kane singing Bohemian Rhapsody.
It's just not in his repertoire.
The problem with Rice is that's he's expected to be better going forwards when that's not his game. He's a brilliant player, loads of energy and under the right coaching could easily develop the skillset to control the tempo and run the game. His technique, pace and power are all there. His passing range is good, as is his vision. It's a lack of confidence to pick up the ball and look to run the game which holds him back currently, but Pep is the perfect man to coach him.
He's not the same as Bellingham, who is probably better in the final third. But adding Rice could give us the defensive balance we sometimes miss with Gundo in there (when we play a 4-3-3) and play alongside Rodri or instead of at times as well.
I didn't want Phillips initially before warming to it, and that was mainly on the basis that Rice just seemed a much better fit for us and it was worth waiting 12months to make it happen.
