Kalvin Phillips

I do think his own confidence plays a part. He looks like a frightened rabbit when he’s playing for us, has contributed to a couple of soft conceded goals and his scanning seems forced. His first touch isn’t brilliant but the lad can definitely find a pass. His lack of game time makes him look sluggish, which he is putting down to exactly that. I think it’s actually much more than that. He doesn’t appear to be technically capable both physically and mentally to play Pep’s style of football. At Leeds he was outstanding breaking play up and then playing a fast ball forward, we seldom do this. Ours is a more considered approach, waiting for an opportunity to exploit space having moved the opposition team about.
I would still love for the lad to come good and prove a lot of doubters wrong but sometimes you just have to shake hands and move on. Time will tell how Kalvin and Pep see this over the next 8 or 9 weeks.
His confidence must be really low, but he is in a catch-22 situation. He can’t build his confidence as Pep doesn’t trust him because he hasn’t shown any sign of improving.

He’ll have been played thousands of clips showing him what he needs to do as a 6 at City. He doesn't seem capable of learning it though.

He’s done at City. He’s about the 4th choice number 6. He’ll get a few minutes here and there to rest more important players, but he’ll be off in January.

The role that Rodri plays in a Pep team requires a special player with specific skills. Unfortunately, Kalvin doesn't have the spatial awareness and tactical nous to perform this role.

Some people really wish Philips is just like Cancelo so they can even have more reason to justify they hate towards him.

I hate this forum sometimes.
I would say Cancelo and Phillips is a bad comparison as Phillips doesn't strike me as a bad apple that Cancelo is. I don't get the hate thing either. I have slated Phillips previously but i certainly don't hate him. I just think it hasn't worked out for him and wish him well wherever he moves to.

If he is smart and is being advised smartly, the first thing his agent should do is give a call to Newcastle as Tonali is banned for next 10 months and Newcastle need a body in the midfield.

I was talking to a lad on the phone who I work with, who is Newcastle fan, and he was saying there are some rumours that they are looking at Phillips.

They would probably want him on loan though.

I get it would be a good move for him if given game time to see just what he can do, personally I don't wanna see him go just in case we did have an injury catastrophe and need him...

Yeah but not to be unkind to the lad but he's a bang average Premier League player at best. even if he was to go, there's a chance we could look around Europe and find a better replacement in January. it doesn't mean they have to be another Rodri because who is? but maybe we could find someone thar can at least bridge the gap a bit between the level of Phillips and Rodri in that position.

If it's possible to do that then we should just sell him because it will be the most sensible thing to do.

For the right club, Kalvin would be a fantastic acquisition. Unfortunately, as much as I wanted it to work out for him, City is the wrong team for him. I like him as a person, not arrogant, not a bell end and not a snide like some. Hope his future is bright.

Ok. He's not a bad player. But he's not a good player either, or put it this way — he brings nothing at the level that is required to play in this Manchester City team.
He'd be goodish in a mid-table side. And he'd be something like a star in a Championship side. But I now just think he's at the wrong place, here.

There was a moment towards the end of the match when we were already at 6:1, and he suddenly got the ball in a dangerous area with lots of space in front of him. I wish he would just show us what he can do, run with the ball, dribble, have a go. Instead, he comes across as slow and indecisive most of the time.

Yep looked terrified and was desperate for someone to lay the ball too
