Karim Rekik

I think this lad could go on and become world class.

I know that's quite a statement - but this lad is quality.

Interesting to note he's been called up into the Holland squad ahead of van Djik (a player we're linked with) - despite being 3 years younger.

On what are you basing the opinion that he could become world class, as opposed to, for instance, the many many young players at various clubs who didn't reach that level ?

His EDS performances, or his current performances ?

Watched when he came on for Holland. Looked smooth and comfy - moved the ball smartly. No probs. Confident in his recovery jump, I tried to imagine MDM pushing up on his opponent like that, even letting the stiker drift a yard or two behind in keeping the line high ... and I shuddered at the thought.

Made his full debut tonight, not bad eh Nev?
TBF they were only playing France in Paris...

no, hold on a minute that can't be right can it?

If he looked a Premier League standard defender when playing for Holland then I'm made up, but until I see it, I don't believe one word of it, because people can look at examples of Rekik playing & post stuff like this...

Talksport piece on him today with video highlights of his performances, looks a tad better on the ball than MDM and seems good in the air, and with plenty of pace, so could definitely be an option.

I will definitely be trying to catch some of the Dutch game and some PSV games online to see some more......

Here is that video.

Can you please find me the reference point on that video so I can see how wrong I've been all the times I've wached Rekik & that he does in fact have pace ?

Because I'm fucked if I can see one ounce of any kind of pace in anything on there. Garcia can do all of that with time to spare. In fact i can't see one example of anything which isn't elementary defending, which you would expect any defender to do. Is there one occasion in that video where you would expect ANY defender playing in any league, to struggle ? Does he do ANYTHING on there that gives anyone any idea what he would do when faced with a difficult defensive situation ?

This is why I don't trust one word of stuff I hear people say about Rekik.

I've seen him left for dead by moderate pace & hopelessly beaten in the air by people who aren't especially good in the air.

If he looked fast & aerially dominant v France then that's fantastic, but I don't trust the word of any of you lot as proof of it.

Imo, he is very slow & very average in the air. He is good on the ball. If he can learn to cope with that & be a centre back in the Premier League then fine, but if he plays for us next season, you will definitely be watching a bloke who lacks pace & isn't great in the air.

Revisit these comments then.

Here is an example of someone in similar situations but moving quicker & doing much more difficult & crucial defending.

Which looks the more impressive ?

Great video,Karim looks calm and composed and his reading of the game is excellent,he closes down the opposition very well and his technical ability is right up there. It certainly doesn't show him as being weak in the air either.

Thanks Nev.

I think he thinks you need to be a sprinter to play at centre-half, you don't and just the fact that a few different EDS coaches, Bobby and his coach at PSV have felt comfortable deploying him at full-back would suggest they trust his pace.

Yes, it's not as if there is any evidence to suggest we have had a problem with our system being vulnerable to pace is it ? No no, not a problem at all. Don't know what gave me that idea.

Rekik's technical ability is indeed quite good, for a defender, but that video doesn't show anyone anything about his aerial ability or his pace. It is routine stuff & Dedriyk Boyata would not struggle to do anything Rekik does there, including on the ball .

I think he has played ok at fullback (that's 'ok' not 'brilliant, or 'the next Stuart Pearce....') & I wouldn't rule out him becoming one, as you have the line to push players out & are not the last line of defence. His best spell of football in this country, indeed his ONLY impressive spell of football in this country, was when he played at fullback, particularly on loan, where he got rave reviews at Portsmouth, playing fullback & did ok for City in that position. I also think he could possibly learn to play Garcia's role, as he is a decent footballer & would be a decent defender, for a midfield player, but will have big competition for that role . For any of this stuff, it's one thing having a career, & it's another having a career at City. Imo he is currently absolutely nowhere near the standard City should be aiming for.

When he played centre back for the EDS, he cost us goals being caught out for pace vs players from the likes of rags & Liverpool, who have so far failed to materialise as being Premier League standard. So he was left for dead by people who may not actually be any good. The EDS defence is now better, without him, than it was with him & it's not even a close thing. They are MILES better. He was an absolute mess for City when he played there in friendlies & we were a different team when he went off. He was hopelessly out of his depth playing there v Balotelli, who had the easiest game I've ever seen him play.

Now people are claiming he's the bees knees because he has held down a shirt in the Erdevise.

If he is a drastically improved player & suddenly miraculously found a yard of pace since Christmas, then I can't argue because I haven't seen him but I know for sure that the difference between what he's doing now & what we will require him to do, is as big as the difference between playing for City or Coventry City. In fact, I would be much more confident in him if he had been holding down a place at Coventry.

If he is to make it at City, then a season in the Championship or at a lower end Premier team, would be the place to go & prove it.

Not as a replacement for Joleon Lescott. Do that next year & imo we are one long term injury away from blowing the lot.

The idea of him plus Nastasic v Sturridge & Suarez scares the shit out of me, & should do you lot too.

Wow, your last post is the most exaggerated I've seen from you on that topic, Nev and that's something to say.

It's like the more you give an opinion on Rekik, the more you believe your own words. Now it's Balotelli with one of his easiest games when he was playing against Karim.

I reckon the next time you will state that Balotelli actually scored a hattrick against PSV that day.
