Keir Starmer

You’d hope everyone does.
I'm sure we all do.

Unfortunately I don't give him any hope whatsoever, other than possibly (probably even) a short term sense of feel good that cannot last.

The problem is he believes in an expanded, interventionist state, and that can never work. Why? Because the state is fucking useless at everything it does. Always has been, always will be. Nameless morons in endless quangos earning a fortune, doing fuck all other than wasting vast amounts of money, making shit undemocratic decisions that no-one voted for, messing with peoples' lives and costing a fortune to do so. It won't make our lives better, just poorer. It's doomed to fail as it always does.

What a load of free market fundamentalist bollocks.

Please don't shut up about it. People need to know what it's actually like. My missus goes through the same and it's properly shit.
Yes, and the reason for this is the last 14 years of the tories hostile climate.
Four weeks after labour came to power, her 16 month wait for the results of her 'review' was sorted with a 20 minute phone call from a lovely woman at the dwp. Doubled her award and back-dated 16months.

Life is never that black and white, if you did the exact opposite of what you are saying there and let the 'market' decide the country would be a very bad place for very many people.

There's a really interesting book called The Entrepreneurial State that looks at technology development historically and in the future in relation to the state and private sector. Though it focuses mostly on innovation and technology it's speaks to the broader questions. It's not without it's flaws but if you haven't read it, it's a very interesting book and offers up a different lens to the one you use above.

Thanks - I'll take a look at it and maybe buy it.

I'm not advocating no government. Just small government please. Privatize what would benefit from privatization, and if it would not then sure let the state run it. But my list of the latter is rather shorter than Starmer's (or god forbid, Rayner's).

Off the top of my head, I would like the state to:
  • Keep us safe, domestically and from international threats
  • Heal us when sick
  • Educate our kids
  • Look after the poor and those unable to care for themselves
  • Look after us in our old age
  • Provide an environment for business to thrive
Is there anything I've forgotten in there?
