The landlord was a man gone over the edge and he had seconds to give Starmer some stick before his security got him away and the opportunity was gone. Your ordinary man rarely gets a chance to confront these people so when they do it often looks aggressive and deranged because of the small window of opportunity. They have to provoke a reaction from the politician otherwise they'll just ignore them and move on. I'm sure I heard Starmer say, " I'm not discussing this with the likes of you," which suns up the contempt they feel for the general public as a whole.
He didn't say that. There wasn't much point talking to the landlord because he wasn't interested in a two conversation and just wanted to vent anger.
It was daft to enter the pub afterwards though, they should have moved on.

To be fair I’m not sure it was clear the bloke was the landlord nor that he would deny Starmer just for holding a different opinion than him. Think I’d swerve that boozer if I was local not really the sort of tolerant establishment I like to frequent. And he was obviously bang up for it, had a graph ready, I always carry a graph around with me just incase I bump into an MP.

I bottled out of a chance to confront Michael Heseltine. Just happened to be in Bolton when he was, and he'd opposed Thatcher on the poll tax. I passed his entourage, and would have asked "Why did you vote for the poll tax in Scotland but not in England?"As I said when presented with a small window of opportunity people often go over the top and they never get over what they really want to say it just comes across as a crazy rant.
We don't know that's what Starmer was referring to in his reply but it's still appears condescending.

Yeah I got that too, I think they assumed he was just a nutter. From some of the tweets put out in response, it seems that Starmer was invited beforehand by a co-owner of the pub, looks like Landlord got wind of it beforehand hence the graphs.

I think a lot of them do care - they just lack the life experience and humanity to understand the man in the street and his day to day issues. Take Johnson. Described half a million for writing a column chickenfeed. Says he can't survive on a £150k PM's salary, moans coz he has to pay for his own food in number 10 and that of his guests and worries that he won't be able to afford Archie's fees at Eton.
He will have no concept of the man in the street who has £40 for the weeks food and 2 kids one needing £20 shoes and the other a £20 coat and having to decide do the family eat that week or do kids go to school with wet feet and no coat.
They give speeches saying the get it and they understand but they never will - most Labour MP's these days are like that too.

Spot on. I think I saw that house of lords members were getting paid more to turn up for a vote than a family received in benefits for a week. A lot of these people were born into wealth so have no concept of what struggling to feed your kids and pay bills is like. Of what never doing anything with your life but work to just exist. No holidays, treats nothing. Just pay bills and feed and clothe your kids.
The working class ones, of which there aren't many, often forget all that as soon as they get their noses in the trough. Two fucking jags was a perfect example. He came down to the picket line at Dover in 1988 and as an ex seaman said, "Don't worry lads if we get elected we'll look after you.," Once he did he didn't return one call. Wankers the lot of them.
