I posted this in the EDS thread but it bears repetition. I can't see any way that he will get a work permit without playing somewhere on teh continent for two years and breaking into the full international team on a regular basis.


"I predict that he won't get a work permit. Players have to be deemed to be of the "highest calibre". In order for a non-EU player to secure a work permit, the player must meet the following two requirements:

1.The player must have participated in at least 75 percent of his home country’s senior competitive international matches where he was available for selection during the two years preceding the date of application; and
2.The player’s National Association must be at or above 70th place in the official FIFA World Rankings when averaged over the two years preceding the date of application21

The FA defines “senior competitive international matches” as World Cup matches and qualifiers, continental tournaments and qualifiers (i.e. UEFA European Championships, CAF African Cup of Nations, CONMEBOL Copa America), and Confederations Cup matches. It's the next bit that concerns me. There is a right of appeal to an "independent panel"

When the "independent panel" was initially formed, just prior to the start of the 1999-2000 season, both the panel composition and the rationale behind the decision were made public. Now, however, the panel’s deliberations are confidential and the breakdown of the votes are not disclosed to the public, or even to the appellate club or among the panel itself. Only the final decision as to whether to endorse the player’s work permit is made public.

In other words, the make up of the panel is secret as is its reasoning for accepting one player but not another. As I say, I'd put money on his not getting a work permit."

As you would expect, the rags are the experts at appealing on the exceptional talent rule.
Step forward Javier Hernandez, Anderson, Zoran Tosic, Shinji Kagawa and that's just after 5 minutes of googling.

I think the last one we were granted on that ruling was for Nastasic.

Striker Kelechi Iheanacho Training With Crew

Seventeen-year-old Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho will train with the Crew until mid-October but is not a candidate to join the club permanently, coach Gregg Berhalter said today.

“It’s a guy who is training here for a period and then he’s going to rejoin Manchester City later in the fall,” Berhalter said today at the Crew’s facility in Obetz. “He wanted a place to train, to stay fit, stay moving and we offered it to him.”

Berhalter said Manchester City approached the Crew about finding some time for Iheanacho through Claudio Reyna, who played for Man City, was Berhalter’s teammate on the United States national team and is the current director of football operations for Major League Soccer expansion franchise New York City FC.

“He has good connections with Manchester City and he wanted to place (Iheanacho) at a club that he can train and I guess similar philosophies, similar values in soccer,” Berhalter said. “We said we’d be glad to help out.”

Iheanacho played in today’s scrimmage against the Crew’s USL Pro affiliate Dayton and scored a hat trick in the Crew’s 5-1 win. Midfielder Ben Speas scored the other two goals.

Iheanacho has starred for Nigeria at the World U-17 Championship in 2013 in the United Arab Emirates, scoring six goals and adding seven assists while leading his country to the title. Here is an interview he conducted after the tournament.

He also scored two goals during Manchester City’s preseason tour of the United States.

Asked if Iheanacho is a candidate to join the Crew full-time, Berhalter said, “No.”

They won't be inclined to do City any favours but, equally, they probably have no reason to be vindictive towards us either.

I think that's a matter of conjecture Matty, I know the panel members are no longer made public, but they are surely from the football world, and there is little chance of them being impartial, we'll probably get Ferguson, Ferdinand, and Woodward on his panel, but even if there are no rags, there are almost certainly bound to be a majority of anti City people on it.

From memory David Pleat used to advise the panel on exceptional talent cases. He'd be lucky to get the name right let alone judge ability.

Plenty of precedent for players getting visas on the exceptional talent rule though.

You can add Angelo henriquez to that list of players the rags have got via the exceptional talent rule. Who, I hear you ask? Yeah I've hardly heard of him either

Would the problem be solved if we 'advised' the Nigerian FA to give him a full cap as we have coaching programmes there.

I keep seeing this 75% thing but when would that begin? When he's 16/18/21?

I seem to think Varela was signed after appearing in a world youth tournament (can't remember what age level), But Uruguay did not win the tournament & Varela was not voted most important player of the tournament & scored no goals & provided no assists. So if Iheanacho is denied a work permit on the exceptional talent ruling something obviously stinks.

Just read the interview posted on the previous page with the Crew manager and he mentions that he is going to join us in the fall. I think Nacho is odds on to be our 4th striker and the club seem confident of a work permit as soon as he turns 18.

I think you will find the work permit bit is not going to be that simple.

Agreed but considering the club let Guidetti go I feel they are confident of getting it done and putting him in as a 4th choice striker. We only have Jordi Hiwula otherwise.

If I remember rightly here, in the past some players have been given a work permit and their clubs have been told that if they are not used their permits will be blocked. I'm not quite sure on this but something in the back of my mind is saying this to me.

Nope, the SFA gave them an extension as their side of the deal was done well before the deadline it was just some paperwork from our end that we faxed through late. The transfer was ratified yesterday.

Iheanacho - Our 4th Striker?

There is a thread about this lad already on the Academy forum but I've heard that he may join the senior squad when he signs formally in October. There are some doubts apparently about him getting a work permit though which may see him start off in New York.
There seems to be genuine excitement about his quality and he did look pretty special for a 17 year old in pre-season. Maybe it was a factor in the odd decision to let Alf go.
