They painted themsleves as serious people who were prepared to spend money and were in it for the long term.
500m says they are serious and in it for the long run
Then they made a complete hash of sacking a manager who was starting to get it right
many disagree.
and produce extremely entertaining (but sometimes infuriating) football and replace him with a non-English speaking,
mancini lived in england for a short while and has been taking lessons for years
ergo, involved in italian football
who has never managed in the Premiership and, despite his record in the (corrupt) Italian league, has achieved no success in Europe (whereas Ferguson & Benitez had).
last point is the best. the inter fans say they are cursed in europe, always have been. still this is the element of risk, and I agree, it makes it clear that this was not the optimum outcome. still, compared to the way things have worked in the past, it's a pretty good situation. I think you're right, mancini is auditioning for english football. if he blows it, then a whole host of options will open up post world cup. it could be ugly and distressing if that's how it has to be, but it's not the end of the world. chelsea got it wrong several times post mourinho, but it didn't stop them from realising when something wasn't working out, and making the change to a better option, regardless of what the outside world think. this is reasonably common in the big clubs of europe... if you think hughes was unlucky to get the chop, how unfortunate was mancini?!
I know where you are coming from, and I know you could be right. I doubt Hughes was the man, but this could be just a mistake. It could work very well though, and it's not the end of the world if it doesnt. Capello post world cup, for example, or Mourinho, or Martin O'Neill, or Wenger, or whoever. even if mancini turns out to be B-grade, there will be a AAA around sooner or later, someone we can all agree on.
It's complicated. It's too late, let me just say that I'm worried, but not as worried as you. I see an opportunity here that I don't think you do yet. Time will tell, and we have to go into this next phase in good faith, or it's doomed from the start. You now have the same level of doubt about Mancini that I did about Hughes. I guess that's the way it works, let's just hope that this guy delivers beyond question.
