Kompany/Garcia partnership

I've notcied recently that Kompany has been getting forward at every opporunity with the ball at his feet. Today I watched him on a number of occasions and noticed early on that Mancini had a word with Garcia. Everytime Kompany advanced with the ball Garcia dropped back into an almost CB position.
As Vinnie started with us as a CM, he knows what he's doing and has the skill to keep posession but also win it again on his way back. Garcia, whilst adapting to the English leagues looks like he is struggling getting back but is good in the air in that defensive position when being caught on the break.

Has anyone else noticed. What do you reckon, keep to that or stop Vinnie from having so much freedom incase we get caught open at the back?

IIRC Garcia played quite a few games at CB for Benfica so he is no stranger to the position. And hopefully this will allow Vinny to bring the ball out of defence more.

I still a lot of people on this forum are extremely harsh on Garcia. He is a defensive midfielder and if his inclusion in the team allows Vinny and Yaya to get forward then he will become a key player for us.

Indeed.

I personally believe he is a defender who 'can play football' if you get what I mean. Is more comfortable on the ball than a typical CB and knows when to advance.

Thought this myself. Kompany has been marauding forward much more recently. Obviously if any player pushes up and is out if position someone will fill in, but it does seem to release kompany quite easily as Garcia can fill in easily.

He could quite easily become a quality defender IMO. Quite a lot of players who started off as midfielders have gone on to become better defenders. Zabaleta and Jordi Alba started off as midfielders and have gone on to become quality full backs as have Mascherano and Kompany.

So Javi Garcia as a CB could definitely be a possibility however I still think unless we signed a deep lying playmaker then Garcia should stay in midfield.

Garcia wont get near when Yaya comes back. He is an average player for which we have paid over the odds for.

When playing teams who play defensive against us or where we dominate possession which is about 80% of our games. A defender getting forward can quite often provide the break we need.

We talk about a lack of width affecting us and being easy to defend against but when Vinny gets forward he will drag their players out of possession and it is a very good option to utilise at certain times.

I'm not saying let Vinny get forward at all times but if he makes an interception or a good tackle and can bring the ball forward to start an attack then this should be encouraged if Garcia is covering him.

I've noticed this and today it was really obvious. I'm sure it's come straight from the training ground. Vinyl got a great goal in preseason doing exactly this. He made one the other week too, think it we Newcastle.

I'd say its from Mancini and the coaching staff to give us another dimension against defensive teams.
